"Get Up Out of This Deathbed!”

“I was scared because it was - he was very serious in that moment, and I was I didn't know what to think other than just fear,” says Hannah Harris.  In  April 2025 Her dad Huey, along with his family were on their way to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for vacation. Along the way, Huey’s wife Andrea noticed something wasn't right. 

Andrea remembers, “When we started off, he was driving and like every other exit we had to stop, he had to use the restroom. It was kind of weird because it's never been like that before. Even when we got to Gatlinburg, he was low energy. He didn't want to go out. He wanted to just stay in the room while we went out sightseeing.”

Nothing helped him feel better. After a week the family drove home to Alabama… Huey was miserable the whole way. 

Hannah describes the night, “when we did get home from Gatlinburg, he did say he wanted to go to the hospital, but since it was so late at night, I was like, “okay, dad, let's just go to bed. And if you still feel like that in the morning, we'll take you to the hospital.” But then he was like, “no, the Holy Spirit is telling me, like, I have to go now.”

Thinking it wasn’t too serious, Hannah and her sister let their mom sleep and took their dad to the hospital, on the way his condition worsened.

Trembling Hannah states, “he started to say like, I can't see. I'm kind of blacking out.

He said he saw stars and like the lights were kind of blurry. I was very scared. I didn't know, like what to think. I was trying to say calm for both me and my sister. And I was like, on the road praying like, God, let's just please get us through this.”

In the ER a quick check of Huey’s vitals revealed his blood sugar was over 800 – he was admitted to the ICU. 

Dr. Rachel Rackard explains the danger Huey was in. “A blood sugar greater than 800 basically means that your pancreas, which is responsible for producing insulin, has completely shut down. Which can put you in a state of acidosis, you can have electrolyte abnormalities with sodium potassium chloride. It can cause liver issues, heart issues, and altered mental status. And so, it can actually be fatal at the time that the person is in that condition.”

Andrea recalls, “in the middle of the night, the girls called me and told me they was at the hospital. They were saying that they were surprised that he wasn't in a coma because this sugar was so high. I have had family members that dealt with the same thing, and some of them passed away from that same thing. So, I was really nervous.” 

Andrea rushed to the hospital to be with her husband. Doctors started him on insulin, unsure what damage had been done to his body. As Huey laid there in the ICU the family fervently prayed and waited.
“I didn't know what to feel because I never seen anything like that before. Of course I was scared, but I was trying to have faith,” said Hannah. “One thing that did comfort me was I was thinking, you know, God's will is not always your will. And that's scary and uncomfortable but also is reassuring because God sees the bigger picture and he sees, you know, he's the mastermind above all of it.” 

Andrea adds, “I would just spend hours just on my knees just crying out to God. Reading scriptures, reading, just quoting scriptures, just praying, praying, praying – asking God to heal.”

That night, alone in the ICU, Huey saw a vision of Jesus - along with his own funeral.

Huey states, “I was drained emotionally. I felt I felt a sense of loneliness in that hospital room.  I knew it was serious, I said “Lord, I don’t want to leave my family just yet.”  And the Holy Spirit stood in my room and said, “get up out of that death bed” I got up out of the bed, and never got back in it.

Huey believed God for his healing and from that moment on, his body began to improve. He was discharged from the hospital after several days and Dr. Rackard was surprised at his follow-up. “When he had first come out of the hospital with diabetic acidosis, he was on a regimen of 45 units of insulin a day. But since that time, he's actually weaned himself completely off of insulin and now maintains normal blood sugar. Everything has completely resolved in the eyes of our medical diagnoses.”

Resuming daily life, Huey continued to amaze his doctor with his remarkable recovery.

Dr. Rackard continues, “in most cases, we don't see a positive outcome -  their diabetes gets worse, their cholesterol goes up, they get worsening heart disease. But in his case, I really have no clear explanation for how he has recovered so well. It's certainly nothing that myself as a physician had done. I think that that really, it's truly a miracle that he is healed.

And, you know, they say God is a great healer and doctor and - and in this case, I mean, I think it's shown itself.”

Today Huey and his wife are active in ministry sharing about the power of prayer and a God who heals. 

Andrea smiles, “I’m very thankful that our kids are men and women of faith. Because some of those days that he was in the hospital, I was on the phone with the girls, we were all praying that he would pull through.  So just being a family of faith, I think that really what brought him out and brought him back home to us.”  

Hannah adds, “That made me feel very grateful and made me feel like my prayers and my family's prayers were answered. But also, it made me feel like God was always there, like the whole time God was there. And God just used this to display his power and display his grace and mercy.”

Huey reflects, “I'm very thankful I went through all of this. It made me a better person. Gave me a better view of life now. And I don't take life for granted anymore. Very grateful. I could have been worse, a lot worse. Could have been in a coma. Could have lost my sight permanently. But I'm very thankful.”
