Persistent Stutter Ceased After God Spoke to Him!

“Mitchell was a very outgoing kid, always into something, always full of life and energy.”

That is until the day his mother, Karen, and his grandmother, Carolyn, got the call that thirteen-year-old Mitchell Sheffield had had an accident at school and hit his head. They rushed him to urgent care and then to the emergency room.

“They did CAT scans and did tests on him and said that he had received a concussion on the right side of his brain and it's the part of the brain that controls your speech, Karen remembers. “And while we were in the emergency room with him, he started having a stuttering problem. They said that you can take medications for the pain, and that the stuttering may or may not go away. He may or may not get his speech back.”

That diagnosis put Mitchell’s dreams in jeopardy. From the time he was a little boy, he’d wanted to be a pastor.

“He had this desire to go to church and the desire to sing and the desire to play,”

Carolyn recalls. “He plays by ear, and he can play anything people want to hear. God has blessed him with that gift. He looked forward to coming to my house, not to watch cartoons, but to talk about God.”

“And him not being able to speak was a very serious problem for him,” Karen adds.
Over the next two days, Mitchell’s headaches-and other symptoms-became more intense.

“The stuttering started gradually getting worse. He started having dizzy spells, walking across the floor was a challenge for him,” says Karen. “We decided to take him to another ER in our area.”

“They said the same thing, it's just a concussion, it's gonna take a while,” Carolyn adds.

On Monday, they took Mitchell to see a neurologist.

“We thought, man, this guy knows what he's doing. He's gonna help us, but he didn't give us any hope. They said it's going to take time. If it's gonna take time, why is he getting worse?” Carolyn asks.

Mitchell’s church prayed for him. Later, at home, his mom decided to anoint him with oil and join in prayer as a family.

“We asked for Mitchell's healing, and we were expecting him to be healed instantly for God to hear our prayers,” Karen says.

“We were desperate, you know, for him to get better,” adds Carolyn.

Karen also made a video of Mitchell asking people to pray and posted it on Facebook.
“And we were amazed at the responses that we got from people all over the world saying how they were praying for him,” Karen enthuses.

However, Mitchell’s condition wasn’t improving.

“We wanted him to get better and instead he was going downhill,” observes Carolyn.

“We were all frustrated and concerned.”

Karen was also worried. “Mitchell gradually went into deep depression. He started secluding himself. He started withdrawing from the family. He went in the bedroom, shut the door. He wanted darkness. He didn't want any light. He didn't want any sound. And he struggled so hard to talk, to get a sentence out.”

“He'd get frustrated 'cause he couldn't talk,” Carolyn adds. “And it was really scary to see him like that, struggling like that.”

“He just got to where he wouldn't talk anymore,” Karen recalls.
Then, on Saturday, June 8th, eight days after the accident, Mitchell was lying on the sofa at his grandmother’s when he says the lord told him to go outside and pray. At first, he resisted. Finally, Mitchell obeyed and made his way outside.

‘“I began to pray, and I began to beg God, ‘Lord, I can't deal with this any longer. I beg you that you'll heal me.’
The anointing of the Holy Spirit came upon me. And instead of saying, “God, I beg you to heal me”, I began to say, ‘God, I thank you for healing me. I thank you for delivering me. I thank you for setting me free!’
Instantly my headache went away. Stuttering went away, dizziness, anxiety went away.
I was so filled with joy; I couldn't explain it. I knew that God healed me. I knew that God touched me. And I never stuttered again.’”

Mitchell ran inside to share the news.

“He started speaking,” Carolyn remembers. “He started worshiping, thanking the Lord. It was a glorious time. It was a miracle. I mean, and I saw it. When you see something with your eyes, you know it's real, you know?”

“We started jumping up and down and screaming and praising God,” Karen recalls.

“And he hasn't stopped talking since,” laughs Carolyn.

Mitchell was elated. “My faith elevated that day, and it hasn't come down since. I'll never forget saying, ‘Lord, from this moment on, I will do anything for you.’”
Mitchell is back to preaching, playing the piano and singing. His greatest joy is sharing Christ with others.

“We have a reason to praise God every day,” Mitchell notes. “Just by waking up in the morning, having breath in our lungs. When you feel like all hope is lost, there still is a God who will never leave you nor forsake you. When you finally break through that wall and praise him, that's when he'll touch you. That's when he'll heal you.”
