5 Steps to Sharing the Gospel
5 Steps to Sharing the Gospel
Jesus commands us to share the Gospel in
and . Many Christians find this to be intimidating and struggle to know how to begin, so we’ve created a guide to help assist you. Jesus has radically changed us, so let’s share with those that don’t yet know Him! What a blessing to have this opportunity to be part of changing someone’s eternity! If you’ve shared the Gospel before, you may have experienced the resistance often met when discussing Jesus with a non-believer. Some people can be very open to learning about Him, while many have had poor experiences in church or a Christian has hurt them badly in their past. So, when you meet resistance, know this is a normal reaction!
It’s crucial never to be pushy when you’re sharing but to be kind and compassionate (
) and understanding. So take your time, listen thoughtfully to their questions, and respond with kindness and respect.Don’t be discouraged if it takes more than one interaction for them to break down their walls and engage in thoughtful discussions. It is the Spirit that convicts, so our responsibility is only to share the Gospel!
Below are five steps to help equip you to share the Gospel. Use these steps and the guided prayers to prepare your heart and mind to tell the world about Jesus!
- Pray
We can tell people about Jesus all day, but the Spirit convicts the heart and brings transformation. Therefore, we should be in constant prayer, asking God to give us opportunities to share Jesus and that the Holy Spirit would convict the hearts of those who hear about Him.
Use this prayer as a guide.
Father, I pray you would give me opportunities to share about Jesus with people. I pray for a balance of boldness and tenderness as I share the Gospel. Let Your words come from my mouth and not my own. Go before me in every conversation and use me to share as You need. I pray for a humble heart and the understanding that it is only You that draws people to Yourself. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
- Have Scripture ready to share
says, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.” So when we share about Jesus, use the Bible to help share. The Word of God is the truth, so use scripture to tell of Jesus. We know that every word in the Bible points to Jesus, so we have many options.
Use the following Scriptures to walk through the Gospel, starting with the fact that we are sinners, separated from God; as you work your way through these passages, you’ll share that Jesus is the only way to salvation.
- Share your testimony
You are living proof that the Gospel of Jesus Christ changes lives, so use the story that God is writing in you to share about Him!
If you’ve never written down your story, we encourage you to take some time to reflect on where you were before you knew Jesus as your Savior, what brought you to know Him, and what has changed since you professed faith in Jesus.
Simply sharing about yourself and how Jesus has changed you is a great way to engage in these conversations with a non-believer. We know people can resist hearing about Jesus, so this practice is non-threatening and informal while explaining that Jesus changes lives.
- Pray
Stay focused on the fact that we are called to share as believers, but only the Holy Spirit can change lives, so continue to pray. Continue to ask God to change their hearts and allow them to understand.
If you’re unsure how to pray, use this guide below.
Father, thank you for the opportunity to share Jesus with _______. I pray that you would transform their heart and draw them to You. Let them understand their need for a Savior and that it’s only through Jesus that they can have eternal life with You. Please give me the words to say to them and go before us in every conversation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
- Repeat as necessary
More often than not, it takes a few conversations, and these conversations could span years. Don’t lose heart! Jesus is in control, and you’re doing what He commanded. Continue to pray, read the Bible, and share Jesus every chance you get!
