Every Drink Made Them Sick

In this community in Chiapas, Mexico, Berta says her greatest challenge is finding clean water for her children to drink along with a safe and private place to use the bathroom.  She gets water from a murky cistern that collects runoff from the mountain nearby. “Sometimes I boil the water,” said Berta.  “And then I wait long time for the dirt to settle.”

Berta’s two children get sick regularly from drinking bad water. “My baby recently got sick with stomach pain.  We had to take him to the hospital right away because it was really bad.”

Her older son Emmanuel faced a similar dilemma: “I had diarrhea. My stomach hurt… I felt awful.”

“We all got sick with stomach problems, even the adults. It was awful—the stomach pain just wouldn’t go away,” recalled Berta.

Then, thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing installed a safe water system for Berta and the community.  We trained families in hygiene, hand washing and keeping water clean and safe. We then built bathrooms with toilets for 33 families.  Finally, we set up tanks with chlorination, which provide safe drinking water. “I know my children won’t get sick now. Every day I thank God and the people who helped us. It’s a blessing for my family!”
