The Water Nearly Killed Her

4-year-old Alisson lives with her parents on a small island off the coast of Honduras. Their greatest need, according to Alisson’s mother Rosa, has been finding enough clean water for drinking, bathing, cooking and washing clothes.  “There is no clean water here!”

The family relies on a shallow 6-foot-deep open pit well dug with a pick and shovel by Alisson’s grandfather.  The water must be strained and even then it’s not safe to drink.

The water we have is yellow and very dirty. That’s what we drink, cook with, and use for everything,” said Rosa, Allison’s mother.

Sometimes, even when the water looks cleaner, there are still hidden dangers: like bacteria and ecoli. Rosa remembered the day she thought Alisson would die after drinking it.  “Because of the bacteria in the dirty water, she was vomiting and had non-stop diarrhea. What happened to her was horrible,” recalled Rosa with emotion in her voice an in her eyes. “I thought I might not see my daughter alive again. I asked God not to take her from me. It hurts to see your child so sick.”

Thankfully, Alisson survived, but the clean water crisis persisted. “I thought, ‘It’s hard to be poor and have to drink such dirty water.’ The well around here never have good water.  We drink it because we have no other choice.”

Then, thanks to YOU, Operation Blessing undertook one of its most challenging water projects ever.  We ran pipe a long distance from their home from an existing deep water well and treatment plant.  We pumped the clean water to a large tank.  Finally, we ran pipes to Alisson’s home. “The water I drink tastes great! I like it!” declared Allison.

“Thank God we’ll have clean water to drink. We won’t be afraid of children getting sick anymore. That water is very clean, very clear. I felt great joy watching the water reach our home.  To everyone who helped, God will bless you for what you’ve done for us! Thank you!” said Rosa.
