After the Storm, His Dream Survived
Daniel Lancaster and his family were in the middle of building their coffee business in Swannanoa, North Carolina, when Hurricane Helene tore through their mountain community. Water damaged their shop, halted construction, and put their family’s future at risk.
Daniel explained, “So, as, like, a father with three young kids, already kind of going out on a limb to start this business, as risky as it was, now, the reality of, like, we've already put all of this money into it, and I have no job.”
Then Operation Blessing arrived to help people rebuild. It was exactly what Daniel needed.
Daniel said, “Someone from Operation Blessing popped by and asked like, ‘Do you need help? Do you need skilled labor or painters?’ And, I was like instantly, ‘Painters! Yes!’ And like, the next day, there were, like, eight people in here helping me paint, and, like, we got down a section that I knew would had taken me, like, two weeks and and that was incredible. That saved me tons of time. I didn't have to hire for that, which just saved again, like another month of, like, working capital.”
Operation Blessing also provided a large coffee roaster, giving them a way to roast coffee for local customers and online orders, a critical step in keeping their business strong.
“And that's really the biggest gift that we could be given,” said Daniel. “We started off as just, planning to be a coffee shop with a small roasting program and with just tourism and metrics that we find in Swannanoa that we need some other aspect of our business to just help us survive the next few years. So, we've really leaned into roasting.”
With help from Operation Blessing and a community rallying behind Daniel and his family, Short Sleeves Coffee finally opened. It was more than a new coffee shop, it was a place for connection, an emotional milestone for their town, and a time for renewed faith.
Daniel said, “To anyone who supported us, whether directly by buying our coffee or through supporting Operation Blessing and the work they do, ‘Thank you for that. You’ve provided an opportunity for a business to survive and stay afloat. And on top of that, you've provided an avenue for now, five employees to have jobs.’ So, just having trust that the God that for whatever reason brought us to this building, uhm, that caused this storm to happen, that brought people in our lives, is ultimately in charge of this coffee shop, is the most assuring thing that we can ever have.”
