The Road to Temptation and the Power to Overcome

I had the windows rolled all the way down and was blaring music as I barreled down the interstate toward North Carolina’s Outer Banks. I had just wrapped up a big, last-minute work project while my wife and family waited for me at a beach house we’d rented for the Christmas holidays. I couldn’t have been more relieved or excited for a vacation.

The state trooper who was parked on the side of that interstate did not share my enthusiasm, especially when he clocked me going 30 miles over the speed limit.

You can probably guess the rest of the story. Suffice it to say, by the time I arrived at the beach house later that night, my jolly spirits had deflated into something far more dejected.

I’d never thought about this speeding incident as “giving into temptation”—until I sat with 1 Corinthians 10. In the passage, Paul recounts Israel’s history: they passed through the Red Sea, ate manna in the desert, and were sustained by Jesus Himself (1 Corinthians 10:2-4). They experienced supernatural deliverance and the very presence of God. And what was their response? They grumbled. They turned to idols. They forgot who had carried them and fell into sin.

Too often we do the same. We experience the goodness of God, the One who rescues us in our most desperate moments—only to turn right back to our old ways. I knew I couldn’t have pulled off that end-of-year work project on my own—not in that timeframe, not under that pressure. God had provided. But instead of thanking Him, I cranked the music, drove faster, and ignored the speed limit signs. When I was pulled over, I wasn’t even convicted, just annoyed. But the fact was that I had broken the law.

This is the exact attitude Paul warns us against:

If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! (1 Corinthians 10:12 NIV)

But next to this warning, the Scripture leaves us with hope:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it (1 Corinthians 10:13).

I had every chance to slow down and obey the signs; I simply chose not to. By the grace of God my salvation is not dependent on my driving record—or anything else I’ve done! And when new temptations arise, I can take confidence in my new life in Christ: I’m no longer bound to my old ways. I’m a new creation and He has given me the power to overcome temptation—even if I still need the occasional reminder from a state trooper.

The next time temptation shows up—whether it’s something obvious or something as ordinary as impatience, pride, or a heavy foot on the gas pedal—remember that God hasn’t left you to fight it alone. He is faithful. Before you ever face the temptation, He has already provided a way out. Because of Christ, you have the power to overcome what once would have overcome you.
