Reflection and Awe Lent Series - For Freedom We Are Set Free

It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore, keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. –Galatians 5:1 (NASB)

Jesus came to set you free. He set you free to enjoy the benefits of that liberty. We are meant to live in the freedom that Christ’s blood purchased for us. This freedom is not just a gift but a call to action, an invitation to live lives that honor God in every thought, word, and deed.

Imagine this: A father saves every penny to buy his son a toy car. When he finally gives it to him, he eagerly waits to see his son race it around the yard, laughing and having fun. Instead, the boy places the car in a box, sets it on a shelf, and stares at it, imagining what it would be like to play with it.

As the father, wouldn’t you want to say, “The car wasn’t meant to sit there—it was meant to be enjoyed, explored, and cherished”?

In the same way, God didn’t set us free so we could leave our freedom untouched, like a toy on a shelf. He reminds us that He paid the ultimate price for us, and we have been made free to live fully in that freedom.

Let’s enjoy the spoils of Jesus’ victory over sin and the grave—honoring His sacrifice by living in light.

Living in the light means walking in God's truth, purity, and righteousness and reflecting His character. It is a call to live in fellowship with God, free from the darkness of sin, and to allow His light to shine through us so others may see His glory. 

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. –1 John 1:5-7 NLT

If we do not guard our hearts and minds, the old self can subtly creep back in, pulling us away from the freedom Christ purchased for us. Complacency is dangerous, and failing to remain vigilant can lead us to unintentionally agree to return to the chains from which we’ve been set free. Let’s stay focused on standing firm in our faith to live in the light as He’s called us. 

Reflect on the costly sacrifice of Christ—His body broken, His blood poured out—so that you might live in true freedom. This freedom is not just a gift but also a call to action, an invitation to live lives that honor God in every thought, word, and deed.

May the truth of Easter inspire us to live boldly, with grateful hearts and lives that reflect Christ's transformative power.
