This is something that has never escaped me—and I pray it never does.
Years ago, at a women's conference, one of the speakers shared her testimony. She spoke openly about her struggles and how the Lord had helped her overcome them. One of the strongholds she battled, even after salvation, was a persistent and specific pattern of sin. She shared that she had cried out to God because it was something she could not break free from on her own.
One day, while sitting outside, she watched a dog become sick and then return to what it had just expelled. The sight disgusted her. In that moment, the Lord brought Proverbs 26:11 to her mind:
"As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness" (NLT).
She said that was the moment everything changed. The Lord showed her that she had been returning to the very thing He offers to free her from.
That testimony has stayed with me.
Are there sins or unhealthy patterns in our lives that we continue to justify? Do we tell ourselves, "I'll get over it eventually" or "I'll let it go when I'm ready"? Yet when we become weary, stressed, hurt, or overwhelmed, we find ourselves returning to the same behaviors and repeating the same cycle.
Even when we earnestly seek God, it is possible to become trapped in patterns that do not honor Him. The types of sin vary. They could be wasteful spending, gossip, unforgiveness, a critical spirit, hatred, or a host of other sins. The form may differ, but the principle remains the same: how many times will we return to what God calls us to leave behind?
There often comes a point when we realize enough is enough.
Christian author Jim Maxim said in his devotional book 21 Days of Breakthrough Prayer: The Power of Agreement, "You can only go as far for God as you have time with God." Deliverance may come instantly, or it may happen through a process. Either way, staying connected to the One who provides that freedom is key.
When we surrender our struggles to the Lord, He is faithful to reveal the way out. As 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” With our eyes open and our hearts willing to obey, we can find it.
God provides a way for us to live victoriously (see Romans 8:37). We do not have to remain bound to the things He has called us out of. Through His power, we can break the cycle, walk in obedience, and experience true freedom (see Isaiah 40:29-31 and Romans 6:6-7).
He doesn't merely offer us forgiveness—He offers us freedom (see Romans 8:1-2).
