OK Bill Protects Clergy from Officiating Gay Marriages

Oklahoma lawmakers have approved a bill that gives church leaders the right to object to performing same-sex marriage ceremonies.
The state Senate approved the measure 39-6 on Wednesday.
The bill protects clergy and others authorized to perform marriage ceremonies from being required to perform those duties if it conflicts with their religious beliefs.
It would also shield churches from being required to participate in other ceremonies that might conflict with their religious beliefs.
Republican state Sen. Dan Newberry of Tulsa presented the bill. It is now heading to the House for a vote.
