When the Floods Came

CBN.com Abused and scared, 12-year-old Rahul ran away from his abusive home a year ago.  Without any money and no relatives to take care of him, Rahul was still considered one of the lucky ones.

Unlike many street children living in Nadiad, India, he was given food and shelter at an orphanage.  Things were looking up for Rahul.  That was until the floods came.

In June 2005, monsoon rains caused massive floods in western India.

At Rahul’s orphanage, the waters rose three to four feet.  It was enough to destroy most of the children’s belongings and make the orphanage impossible to live in.  The situation looked hopeless, but Operation Blessing knew just how to help.

First, they cleared away mud and debris to make it a safe place for the children.  They also fed the orphans and brought them clean drinking water.

Then, they provided a medical camp.  Every child was given an eye exam, toiletries, medicine, and a haircut.  Rahul and the rest of the children were excited when Operation Blessing presented each of them with new clothes.

“When the floods came, we lost everything,” Rahul said.  “You were the first one to help us.”

Every step of the way – from cleaning the orphanage to providing food, water, medical treatment, and new clothes – Operation Blessings’ work meant a huge difference in each child’s life.  It was just what Rahul needed for a fresh start.

“You have shown me so much love,” Rahul said.  “Thank you for everything.”
