Bring on the war paint!
Does an awareness of living in a realm arrayed for battle influence our mindset today? As God’s armored ambassador living in a temporal world, I have no time to waste on an indulgent lifestyle. I was not arrayed by evil to be fruitful and multiply works of darkness. I’m here to stand with Christ against that darkness—His kingdom come, His will be done.
“Overcome every form of evil as a victorious soldier of Jesus the Anointed One. For every soldier called to active duty must divorce himself from the distractions of this world so that he may fully satisfy the one who chose him.” (2 Timothy 2:3-4
Endure suffering along with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Soldiers don't get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please the officer who enlisted them.

We are surrounded by spiritual POWs, and yet we’re planted on Earth as brave servants of the Lord of Hosts. Therefore, I no longer want to walk blindly through life, insensitive to the deaf, blind, sick, lame, brokenhearted, or those in captivity. As a brave who’s been redeemed, made righteous, and crowned for service by the Lord God, I consider a flesh-driven lifestyle inadmissible (and perhaps mutinous to the Lord of Hosts).
Therefore, let’s choose daily to live in a way that reflects the wonderful abundant life that Jesus died to give us. As a faithful brave, purify your heart and wash your hands; fully surrender yourself to God and seek Him with all your heart, soul, and strength.
War paint is optional.
Pray with me: Father in Heaven, help me to live from a passion to do what is pleasing in Your eyes. Thank You for sending Your Son to buy my freedom with His blood so I could live on Earth as an overcomer, and serve in Your Kingdom as Your brave.
Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you! How often have we heard the devil say this covert, insidious message, particularly during seasons of trial and turmoil?
Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising … that you're going to come through okay.
Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising … that He will restore all things if you stay faithful to Him.
Are you catching on?
Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising ... that your life makes a difference.
Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising ... that you've actually been forgiven for that horrible thing you did.
Do we recognize the voice of Fear, Shame, Pride, Arrogance, those blasphemous voices that thunder: “Don’t let the Lord God, whom you trust, deceive you with His promises.” These voices are making relentless attempts to exalt themselves above God’s Word. And the tone, or the emotion behind the voice, will alter to fit your circumstance. Their message attempts to fit you like a glove on a hand, making it sound like deep “wisdom” from your soul.
As if with a heavy sigh, Shame shakes his head at you, and whispers, "You know you're guilty. If you tell anyone what you did, you'll never live it down. Don't let your God, whom you trust, deceive you by promising unconditional love. Don't fall for the lie about finding freedom in confession."
Yet, what does the Maker of heaven and earth, who cannot lie, and in whom there is no darkness say? Let what He says be your response:
When you hear Shame’s voice, fire back at your enemy, "There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ! Instead of shame and dishonor, I'll receive a double portion of honor!"
Tell Fear: "God has not given me a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline."
Tell Disappointment: "I will give thanks in all circumstances. I will choose joy."
Tell Hopelessness: "I will return to the Lord. He has torn us all to pieces, but He will heal me and bind up my wounds. He will renew my strength and restore me to health."
Tell Arrogance: "I am not too important to help someone else. I will dress myself in humility.”
Let’s wake up and take inventory of the voices.
Father in Heaven, forgive me for listening to the wrong messages. Cleanse my ears with the blood of Jesus and set me free! I believe Your Word that says,
“Every child of God overcomes the world, for our faith is the victorious power that triumphs over the world!” (1 John 5:4
For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.

A word search for "cynic" in Biblehub.com led me to only one verse, where Jacob/Israel had turned cynical during the many years he believed Joseph was dead.
"[Jacob's sons] informed their father, 'Joseph is still alive! As a matter of fact, he's ruling the entire land of Egypt.' But Jacob didn't believe them, because he had become cynical [his heart had become numb]" (Genesis 45:26 ISV).
If you lost the son of your dreams, born from the wife of your dreams who also died ... that might numb your heart too, And think of Joseph's two "unfulfilled" prophetic dreams that his father had once pondered in his heart (Genesis 37:5-11). I fully understand his cynicism.
Oh, the joys of those who do not... join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. (Psalms 1:1-3 NLT) emphasis added.
Never wither? How can I know for sure if I'm following God's ways, as one who meditates on His Word? Here's my litmus test: Am I bearing fruit in every season of life and prosperous? Or am I dry and fainting—like Jacob?
So, let's talk about us today; I'll go first. A while back, as I was meditating on God's Word daily, as usual, and praying (in both mind and Spirit), as usual, yet I suddenly became aware that I wasn't bearing fruit in some areas, and I felt "dry and fainting." Where was the chink in my armor? At what point had my godly meditation changed course? My deep passion is to stay true to God's word and follow His ways, so I asked for Holy Spirit's insight.
The Spirit whispered one word: cynical. (O the sweetness of godly conviction!) He then explained that "Cynicism comes from repeated wounding, from hope deferred, trust broken, doused optimism, and shaken beliefs."
Which of those five descriptions strike home for you?
During that dreadful, grievous season when Joseph was missing from Jacob's life (over 13 years?), God was working behind the scenes. He was training up and positioning Joseph to save all of Israel, as well as restore the son to the father. The reader sees this, but Jacob did not. God saw both.
God still sees both.
He sees what's happening to you, to America and the world, right now, and He sees intimately what's going on behind the scenes where He's vastly at work, flipping the tables on the enemy's schemes. And we are about to see all His work manifest! ... unless the bitterness of cynicism has taken root in our thinking.
What's the opposite of cynical? Believing, hopeful, optimistic, trusting, undoubting. The nature of Jesus reflects all five.
After repenting from my cynicism, I received new instructions from Holy Spirit: to verbally declare these five words over myself, and to own them. I am believing, I am hopeful, I am optimistic, I am...
Father forgive me for being cynical. Holy Spirit, restore in me these five virtues. Heal my heart in these areas and restore me. In Jesus's name.
Jealousy sounds out of character for a perfect and generous God. And yet even the Apostle Paul said,
“For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself, ...” (2 Corinthians 11:2
For I am jealous for you with the jealousy of God himself. I promised you as a pure bride* to one husband—Christ.

So, I asked, “Lord, help me understand this strange jealousy.”
He then took me down memory lane.
When I was pregnant with my first child, I had planned on going back to work after he was born. What was there to do at home with a baby anyway? Change diapers. Feed them. Change more diapers. But my 8-pound-2-ounce bundle of solid boy stole my heart. Within a month of bonding, I was jealous.
I was very jealous.
I would be the one to see his first smile. No stranger was as worthy as I of viewing even this tiny miracle.
I would be there when he crawled, when he took his first step, and to hear his brilliant first word, “Doggie.”
Who carried him for 9 months? Who sang to him while he was in the womb? Who endured the pain of his birth and later on stayed by his side in sickness? I did!
No one else deserved the privilege of witnessing his first feats.
When he turned to his friends to learn about male/female relationships, he provoked my jealousy. What could one eight-year-old teach another eight-year-old about sex? Nothing but foolishness! I had the answers he needed. “Come to me, child. I will not misguide you.”
No one else deserved the privilege of teaching him right from wrong.
No one else deserved the right to instill moral values.
He learned to worship while sitting on my lap.
He listened to the stories I chose with his heart in mind.
His character was my responsibility. Our time together was short, and I did not waste a single minute.
Five years old. I activated the school-crossing signal for a four-lane road. The cars stopped, and we walked our bikes across the first lane, then the second lane. Halfway across, I noticed the 4th lane was empty but the approaching car was not slowing. My beloved son, unaware of the danger and out of my reach, continued on across the 3rd lane. He had started across with complete trust in me not to misguide him. He now headed toward unseen disaster.
Jealous for his life, I cried, “Luke, stop!”
He knew my voice and stopped instantly. A foot in front of him, the car sped through the red light. First-time obedience saves lives—a value I’d instilled in him for that very purpose.
Yes, I was jealous for my children. A shameless jealousy. They are of my blood, of my body, of my heart, and they resemble me. This is not possessive or excessive. This is heaven’s passion, and it is radical.
I get it now.
God, my Father, is jealous for me. He alone knitted me together in my mother's womb and made me in His image. He alone heard my first word and empowered me to crawl. To walk. To run.
He cries with me and laughs with me. Like a hen gathers her chicks, He gathers me under His wing (Matthew 23:37
And now, look, your house is abandoned and desolate.*

). He wants my full surrender. He wants my first-time obedience. And He justly deserves the honor of “raising” me as His own.
He wants me to learn His voice and practice yielding to His nudges to avoid disaster, discover special blessings, and convey His love to others.
When I turn to earthly things to ease my pain, turn to mortal man for wisdom, or rely on my worldly wealth to sustain me, I provoke His jealousy.
“You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.” (Exodus 34:14

Later that night, while rocking in my comfy chair and trying in vain to enjoy a personal time of communion with the Lord, my unrest increased. Go to this friend and make things right. Even if my co-worker didn't detect the saltiness behind the mask of my well-written “sweetly corrective” email, I needed to make amends. The next morning, I asked her forgiveness in a private text and then made it official in person.
God is more interested in how we amend our relationships within the church than He is with our nicest offerings. Amending a broken relationship in the Body is keeping His family together. Do we care enough about the interests of our blood-shedding Savior to take action?
Hypocrisy is leaving a trail of broken, unamended relationships, and then cheerfully dropping a generous offering in the plate to the Lord. Relationships are hard enough without adding the pretense element, so why would anyone in the world want to be a part of something so superficial? This might even fit into one of the six things God hates:
“... there are six things the Eternal hates … anyone who stirs up trouble among the faithful,” (Proverbs 6:16-19
There are six things the LORD hates— no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.

VOICE)
What is the proof that God’s heart is active in us? As soon as we remember that our brother or sister has an issue with us, we leave our gift before the altar and hurry to go make amends. That’s love. And agape love among brethren is what will turn our world upside down.
Did the name of anyone who is at odds with you come to mind as you read this?
Is Holy Spirit prompting you to hurry and make things right?
Don’t delay. Blessed are the peacemakers.
Let’s do our part to dwell in peace with our fellow Christians and keep our Heavenly Father’s beloved family together.
Lord, make our hearts so sensitive to Your desires and loving toward our brothers and sisters that we feel burdened to make things right between us. In Jesus’s name, give us Your love for Your Family—our family.
I read the above description and, immediately, the biblical symbol of trees representing people took on new life.

Imperfections Cause Growth
Do I question God's ability to work His masterpiece in a way that enables me to do the good works He planned for me long ago? He knew all along how I'd turn out. So could I not fairly complain, “Why on earth did you make me this way?”
“...notice how the grain pattern slopes up to 90 degrees to get around wood knots. Remarkable. This is why many consumers enjoy having decorative wood with knots,” - Ron Smith.
If natural wood with knots is this remarkable, how much more remarkable are you and I, given that we begin life made in God's image and then are re-created and transformed by His Spirit? At the same time, our imperfections prevent us from pridefully boasting about our good works. Instead, our “knots” make it so that any display of power must be seen as God’s, not ours.
This beautiful image of knotted wood deepens my understanding of how His power works best in my imperfection. His grace is always sufficient in all situations, but especially when a personal weakness has the potential to defeat me.
Do your imperfections embarrass you—former lifestyle, insecurities, bad choices, etc? Kingdom people value authenticity. Knots keep us authentic.
“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves,” Genesis 3:7

To face your shame takes a brave step, an option Adam and Eve ran from, and instead used fig leaves to hide their “knots.” But if you surrender what shames you into the hands of the Master Pruner, He can and will refashion them into your most attractive feature.
Do you view your imperfections as knots to be hammered out? As features you have to hide from others?
Wearing authenticity is more attractive than sporting fig leaves. Ask for Heaven's perspective, and see how God will refashion the unique “grain” of your wood until it beautifully waves around that very imperfection as He refines and perfects you.
Unlike the director for this musical, God does not require us to audition for roles in His masterpiece work. Instead, the Lord declares all believers His precious stones, and He personally chisels our character to His liking—sans gray makeup. And He alone knows how to fit together these unique stones that, to the human eye, appear to clash. But His finished product will be so magnificent and majestic and alive that He gives His masterpiece a great purpose and a royal status.
This house of living stones will be so beautiful when finished that she, His church, will be counted worthy to be the one and only Bride suitable for the King.
Now imagine if those castle gargoyles decided they wanted to be the stars, and they began singing “Be Our Guest,” or they danced with Belle? I laugh as I picture this happening, but I’m thankful they never did. How difficult would it be for the director to get the show back in order after such a rogue stunt?
That would’ve ruined my audience experience. How blessed I was to see this production pulled off with perfection. Everybody stayed in character and sang at the conductor’s cue and recited lines from memory. Still, I secretly applauded the small, yet significant crew that played invisible parts to set the scene for the entire production.
How hard do we make it for our Master Builder as He pieces us together one stone at a time? How does the world-audience view our rogue arguing and slandering, treating one another like enemies instead of God’s beloved and holy children?
“For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation…” Philippians 2:13-15
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.
