ACLU: No Court Appointed Lawyers for the Unborn
12-31-1969
The American Civil Liberties Union is asking a federal judge to block an Alabama law that lets judges appoint lawyers for unborn babies.
In Alabama, minors must have permission from their parents or a judge to have an abortion.
In fall 2014, new legislation passed that allows a judge to appoint a guardian ad-litem "for the interests of the unborn child."
The ACLU says that change forces teens to go through a "trial" to obtain an abortion.
But state lawyers argue the law provides options to the judge to obtain information about the minor's maturity level.
