Harold Finds Hope in Jesus

In the heart of San José, Costa Rica, twelve-year-old Harold lives in a small, rented room with his grandmother and two siblings. Their living conditions are difficult—multiple families share the same space, and the infrastructure is so old that water contamination and sewage problems are a constant concern. Life hasn’t been easy for Harold. His mother passed away during childbirth, and his father only visits occasionally. His grandmother, despite her age and health challenges, is the sole caregiver, doing her best to raise the children with limited resources.

Growing up in this environment, Harold struggled deeply. He showed signs of emotional neglect—aggressive behavior toward his siblings, academic difficulties, and a longing for love and understanding. His grandmother and father, overwhelmed and under-supported, sometimes responded with verbal and physical abuse. But Harold’s story didn’t end there.

Harold stands with his foot on a soccerball. Thanks to the support of Operation Blessing and generous donors, Harold began to receive the help he needed. He was given academic support, which helped him begin to understand his schoolwork and improve his grades. He joined the soccer team at school, where he discovered a passion and talent for the sport. He even participated in a robotics program, becoming one of the first graduates of the course. These opportunities gave Harold something he had never had before—hope.

But the most profound transformation came through Superbook.

Harold eagerly participates in every Superbook activity. Through the animated Bible stories, he began to see himself through God’s eyes—as someone valuable, loved, and full of potential. One lesson about forgiveness especially moved him. It helped him release a heavy burden he had carried for years.

He was finally able to forgive his mother.

This moment of healing marked a turning point in Harold’s life. He began to pray during group activities and show a new openness to spiritual growth. The stories of the Bible, brought to life through Superbook, helped him understand that he is not alone—that God sees him, loves him, and has a purpose for his life.

Harold’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can happen when children are given the tools to heal, grow, and believe. In a crowded room in Costa Rica, a boy once marked by pain is now stepping into a future filled with promise—all because someone cared enough to share the love of Jesus through Superbook.
