Today, I fought discouragement, because I looked at me instead of God. I looked at circumstances instead of Him. But then, I fixed my gaze on Him, and by the time evening fell—discouragement had also fallen away.
Looking at our difficult circumstances can often get us into trouble. When we examine what is going on around us, it’s easy to think, This is bad, this is messed up, and there is no way it can be resolved. It’s easy to fall into the trap of saying to ourselves, I don’t see how God can work through this or fix it. Or we jump right into questioning why He let this happen in the first place. When discouragement sets in, what are we to do?
The best attitude we can have is to be grateful that God can work in any situation! Nothing is too big or too hard for Him, and we don’t have to face any difficult situation alone.
How often we look at our circumstances in the natural, rather than in the divine or supernatural, where God can work in powerful ways we cannot even imagine! If we only have our own strength to rely on, then we surely grow discouraged. But when we look to God, our hearts are filled with hope and awe because we know He does great and mighty things.
The story of Joseph is one of the greatest examples in the Bible that more is going on than what is seen in the circumstances. Joseph’s brothers plotted to murder him; but instead of killing him, they put him in a pit, then decided to sell him to slave traders. You know the rest of the story—he ended up falsely imprisoned for many years. Now, that is a long string of difficult circumstances! Yet, if you read the whole story from Genesis 37 to 50, you will repeatedly see God’s good hand of favor on Joseph through it all.
God delivered Joseph from prison and promoted him to the second in power in the land of Egypt. At God’s prompting, Joseph wisely stored food and prepared for the coming famine. He was eventually reunited with his family, and there we see the most beautiful aspect of this whole story: Joseph forgave his brothers. The most memorable and oft repeated verse from this entire passage is Joseph’s statement to his brothers in
Genesis 50:20
You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.

“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
Joseph’s story, as do many other stories in the Bible, demonstrates to us that God is always working in those things we cannot see ... yet. God is continually working in and through bad circumstances ... for good.
Take your eyes off the circumstance and look at God. The circumstance can overwhelm until you remind yourself again who God is and who you are in Him.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

. What are life verses? Simply, they are favored verses that hold a deep meaning to us. What do these verses mean to me? They are how I live my life. They guide my life. They are my default verses. When I am faced with choices, struggles, and uncertainties—I run to these verses and apply them to each present situation.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Trust is vital. Trust is faith in action. Trust is the essence of faith and the essence of my walk—my relationship with God. God has built trust deep into my being, and it lies at the core of how I live my life.
And lean not on your own understanding. We need to understand that we are not going to go through life doing things our own way — not in a trusting relationship with God — we will have a divided heart if we try. That is what I have learned. It was a valuable lesson when I learned to just let go of my own way and go His way. My heavenly Father knows best.
In all your ways acknowledge Him. Believe God is who He says He is and make Him Lord of your life. See His Holiness. See His majesty and power. See every knee bowed low one day. He is God. He is in control. He is sovereign.
And He shall direct your paths. My life is in His hands. As I follow Him I am going where He is leading and this is how I know I am where I am supposed to be, and going where I am supposed to be going. Even the twists and turns are sovereignly being navigated by God as I yield my heart and life to His will.
There is power to live the Christian life in these two amazing verses. As you read these familiar verses again today, I pray they plant themselves deep in your heart and grow an unshakable and lasting trust in the Lord your God.
When I need to forgive when others hurt me, I think of Joseph and the injustices he endured. But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive."
Genesis 50:19-20
But Joseph replied, "Don't be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.

When I can’t see the next step of my journey, I remember Abraham. By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.

When I struggle with contentment and joy, I think of Paul. Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know also how to abound: in everything and in all things have I learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in want. I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me.

When I don’t understand anything in the face of hardship, I think of Job. Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked I shall return there. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD.” Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.
Job 1:20-22
Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped; and he said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

God’s peace washed over me and I tucked my dead cellphone away in my purse. Then I continued with my list of morning errands.
It's hard to imagine life without phones, but you don’t have to go back that many generations to a time when there was not a telephone in every home. And now, nearly every member of a family has their own cellphone. Times have changed, and this modern convenience has become front and center as we now have the worldwide web at our fingertips everywhere we go.
This generation is growing up with this technology, but my generation did not. When I think back to life before cellphones, I am reminded of a time when I was much younger, when I would have loved to have had a cellphone!
It was the winter of 1981 and I was in my early 20s. On the way to work, my car skidded on a patch of ice and slid into a snowy ditch in Lexington, KY. I stepped out of my car into a bank of snow at least a foot deep, and I did not have boots on. I still remember that very cold experience. I felt helpless and alone after I climbed out of my car, stood in that cold and deep snow, and realized I was not going to be able to just back my car out of that ditch. I needed help.
God graciously took care of me in that moment of need. I didn’t stand there long before a pickup truck pulled up. Two middle-aged men who were carpooling together and said they worked at IBM, offered to give me a ride to work. It just so happened that I worked right across the street from IBM and had peace about accepting this short ride from them. Once I was at work, some nice people I worked with went out, got my car, and towed it to a tire place. As it turned out, my tires were practically bald. I was a single girl, living alone, who knew nothing about tire maintenance and now had a brand new set of tires to keep me from skidding off icy roads for the rest of the winter. I was rescued and my car trouble was remedied, all without the aid of a cellphone. God doesn’t need one to do what He does!
This life event taught me to always remember to trust in God to take care of me. My life is in His hands and this is where my security lies. He can take care of me whether my cellphone is working or not!
