Tough Texas Law Credited with Drop in Abortions
09-08-2014
A new Texas law has spurred a dramatic decline in the number of abortions performed in state.
A recent study from the Texas Policy Evaluation Project shows abortions declined 13 percent over the last year.
The study attributes the decrease to tougher state regulation of abortion clinics. The regulations have forced many clinics to close their doors.
More than 40 abortion clinics have closed since the law was implemented. Only six facilities are expected to remain open after all safety regulations take effect in September.
The new rules require doctors who perform abortions to maintain hospital privileges within 30 miles of their facilities.
