Stand Strong in Life's Storms
Those who trust in and rely on the Lord [with confident expectation] are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved but remains forever. (Psalm 125:1 AMP)
Are you familiar with the hymn “Solid Rock”? The composer, William B. Bradbury, wrote the music in 1863—in the middle of the Civil War—based on the words by Edward Mote.
Some of those lyrics are:
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ the solid Rock, I stand:
all other ground is sinking sand;
all other ground is sinking sand.
Both Bradbury and Mote used their gifts of music and writing wonderfully well. And because they did, we now enjoy the fruit of their labor, a gift that transcends time.
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells the story of a man who built his house on sand. That construction project did not go well. But when a wise man built his house on the rock, it was strong and sturdy, able to withstand storms.
What are you trying to build today? Does it have a strong foundation in Christ so that it cannot be ultimately destroyed?
Is your project’s purpose to glorify God or to glorify yourself?
Your current project doesn’t have to be anything as big as writing and publishing songs or even building a sports arena, overseeing the building of water wells, or starting your own business.
Maybe your current project is to give to your local food bank on a regular basis even when money is tight. Or to choose to be kind when your patience is thin. Or to do your best job, day in and day out, wherever you are currently, in the middle of trying circumstances—knowing that God will make a way for you (Isaiah 43).
Or perhaps your current project is to restore what the enemy attempted to demolish, including your health, your marriage, your reputation...
Remember that God sees you. He knows the giftings He’s graced you with. And He knows that with His help and in His timing—no matter what kind of storms enter your life—you can be victorious.
With Jesus as our firm foundation, may we all say this about Him:
He alone is my rock and my salvation, my defense and my strong tower; I will not be shaken or disheartened. (Psalm 62:2)
