Reflection and Awe Lent Series - Renewing Your Mind

Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—

 his good, pleasing and perfect will. –Romans 12:2 (NIV)

As we live out this life of faith, the most contested places in our lives are not in the physical but in the mind. They can be the most subtle but the fiercest battlegrounds. 

At the point of salvation, the instant transformation of our lives from sinners to saints marked the death of our old selves and the birth of a new creation in Christ. Our spirit was renewed and made holy and righteous before the Lord. Our challenge is that our bodies, will, emotions, and minds must catch up. Much like the principle of fasting that we discussed earlier in this series, our flesh has to align with our spirit. 

Let’s examine the word renew. It’s often associated with fresh starts and new beginnings. But in Romans 12:2, Paul reveals that renewal isn’t just a moment; it’s a continuous process—a divine transformation that shapes us into the likeness of Christ. This transformation begins in the mind.

Our thoughts are powerful. They influence our actions, emotions, and, ultimately, the direction of our lives. Left unchecked, our minds can easily absorb the patterns and values of this world—values that run counter to the truth of God’s Word. That’s why Paul exhorts us not to conform to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

So, what does it mean to renew your mind? It means replacing worldly thinking with God’s truth, allowing His Word to reshape how you perceive yourself, others, and your circumstances. Renewing your mind enables you to discern God’s will—to understand what is good, acceptable, and perfect in His sight.

This season of Lent is the perfect time to seek renewal intentionally. As we reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and prepare our hearts for Easter, let’s commit to renewing our minds daily.

Ask yourself: What thoughts have I been allowing to influence my actions? How can I align my thinking more closely with God’s truth?

Philippians 4:8 is a great place to start your journey to renewed thinking. Meditate on God’s Word as you begin to put these things into action, taking hold of them in your mind; new roots will begin to go deep, and new fruit and new freedom will flow from you.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (NIV)
