Blind Hurricane Survivor Experiences God’s Love

For Joseph DaSilva, the night Hurricane Milton struck his Sarasota home is one he’ll never forget.

“The winds were really powerful. It just felt like it was going to tear the roof off the house,” says Joseph.

The hurricane was especially scary for Joseph who is legally blind. He lost sight in his left eye due to an injury and has limited vision in his right eye.

“It was very terrifying. We were very concerned. And we got a lot of debris in the backyard. You could just hear stuff hitting it almost like almost sounding like bricks.”

Downed trees were everywhere, and his blindness made it particularly difficult for cleanup around his home.

“Having your sight is just about everything in your life. With my blindness, it’s really hard for me to get out there and you know do anything in the yard because chances are I’m going to trip on something and probably end up getting hurt.”

That’s when Operation Blessing’s Disaster Relief Team provided Joseph help, including cleanup of fallen trees and debris. Joseph’s girlfriend Linda was on hand to help him navigate the property along with OB volunteers.

“You are giving us peace of mind. You guys coming over and helping us oh takes a huge, huge load off my mind and takes a lot of stress off of me you know, so I really appreciate it. We feel so blessed that you guys are here to help us.”

Then, as the day ended, we took a moment to pray for Joseph.

“Thank you so much. God bless you guys and as soon as this whole thing with the storm is over and we get back to normal here, I’m going to become one of those donors too.”
