When There Is Nowhere to Turn
Carrie DiCarlo is a single mom with two kids. A few years ago she thought she had her life under control, because she made $85,000 per year in the construction industry.
Then she lost her job and was absolutely destitute. Her savings ran out in less than a month, and she wound up on food stamps.
“When you go through that kind of period and you don’t know where anything’s coming from, you don’t know what’s next, it creates this wound inside of you,” she says. “Not only did I feel alone, I didn’t know where to turn.”
Then she joined a single mom’s group at her church. The church gives single moms and others in the community food and household necessities donated by Operation Blessing.
“All the groceries, and all the diapers, and all the donations that came out of Operation Blessing—I was so blessed by [all of it],” she says. “I really had to learn to budget my money. But I was always faithful. I always paid tithes—paid tithes even off of my food stamps”.
While she continued to look for a job, Carrie started volunteering at the church’s downtown Dream Center. She helped with the café and other outreaches supported by Operation Blessing.
And she began to pray about what God wanted her to do.
She was hired to run a church program for former inmates. One of the main things she does is teach people how to manage their finances on a shoestring budget. Many of the people she works with get the same help she received from Operation Blessing and the Dream Center.
“It’s so amazing that I can take what somebody poured into me, and pour that back out into someone else,” Carrie says. “It’s amazing!”
