When Learning to Read Is a Luxury

CBN.com —When Khaerudin was only seven, he had to drop out of school.  His parents simply couldn’t afford to send him.
 
Khaerudin’s dad only earns a small income as a security guard.  They live in a shanty in one of the poorest sections of Jakarta, Indonesia.
    
“I was really sad that i had to quit school,” Khaerudin told CBN.  “I wanted to continue because I wanted to follow my dream of becomming a photographer.”

Then about two years ago, Khaerudin’s parents  learned about a  school that was started by CBN.  It provides a free education for students like Khaerudin who can’t afford school fees to attend government schools.  

“I really like going here because the teachers are kind and the other kids are nice to me too!” said the teen.   

Khaerudin told us that while he attended the school, he also received something else from CBN.   

 “I had been  suffering with a hernia and the pain was bad.  But we couldn’t afford surgery.   My parents told  my teacher  and cbn provided me with free surgery!  Now i am no longer in pain!"
 
Then during an afterschool program, the Muslim teen learned about Jesus. 

“Before attending the CBN school, I had never heard about Isa or Jesus,” he said. “They told us that Jesus died for our sins on the cross. I now believe that Jesus is God.”

It didn’t take long for Khaerudin to pray to become a Christian.

“I prayed to receive Jesus into my heart!” he said with a smile.  “After receiving Jesus, I am doing so much better.  I thank you all for your help!  Even though i never met you, you gave me free surgery and a school to attend.  Thank you for everything!”
