School Rules for One Indian Girl
CBN.com "I always wanted to study. I tried many times to study, but my father refused to send me to school. He said that in our caste no one is educated."
Anu (A' nu) has always dreamed of going to school, but so far it's been an impossible dream. Anu has spent most of her life working to help support her family.
"My parents have jobs, but they don't make enough money to take care of us," she says. "My sister and I have to work as maids to help buy food and clothes."
For Anu, every day began and ended with pots to scrub, clothes to wash, and chores that never ended. That is, until one day when she saw something that would change her life.
"I saw children sitting in a group, and I asked them, 'Are you in school?' They said, 'Yes, we are.' The teacher was so kind and she taught the children so well that I asked if I could go to the school, too."
Anu had stumbled upon CBN's evening school program that helps children who can't go to school during the day. Anu was thrilled to find that she could receive the same education as day students!
"I didn't know how to write before. After I went to CBN's school, I learned how to read and write. English was hard for me, but since I've come here, I can read and speak it."
After two years of hard work, Anu graduated from the 7th grade. To celebrate, CBN presented her with the books she'll need for next year. And this makes Anu very happy!
"I would like to thank CBN and all the teachers who taught me. When I get older, I want to become a teacher and teach others - just like those at CBN have done for me!"
