Saving Speaker Ryan

It was painful to read and watch. From a political perspective, as Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan really had no choice other than to endorse Donald Trump. But think about it: if Marco Rubio had won the GOP presidential nomination, it would have saved Speaker Ryan from this moment. If Jeb Bush had won the GOP presidential nomination, that would have saved Speaker Ryan from this moment. If John Kasich had won the GOP presidential nomination, that would have saved Speaker Ryan from this moment. But alas, none of them were able to save Speaker Ryan (on a separate note, Jesus is the only one that can save Ryan and everybody else in the universe).

So here we are. Paul Ryan takes a big gulp, holds his nose, forces a smile and does what he needs to do for the good of the GOP. Some will say he sold out his principles. Give me a break. Donald Trump is not going to change Paul Ryan’s core.  If Paul Ryan decides that entitlement reform no longer needs to be adjusted, then that’s a different story. Or if Ryan decides that free trade is a bad idea, then we’re talking about someone who is sacrificing their principles. In this case, it’s really a very simple choice. Hillary Clinton represents a far worse option so when as my good friend Dennis Prager says, when you’re faced with choices between “awful” and “more awful” you go with awful. Is it a ringing endorsement? No. But Ryan’s job is to further a conservative agenda. On that score, he’s got a better chance with Trump than Clinton.

And one last thing: let’s discuss this idea that Ryan shouldn’t support Trump because of some of his controversial comments on Mexicans, women, etc. Look folks, shall we go back to the 1990’s and Bill Clinton? The last time I checked he was committing some unsavory/sexual/immoral acts in the Oval Office.  Where was the outrage back them from liberal newspaper editorial boards calling on top democrat officials not to support Clinton anymore? Don’t actions speak louder than words? Just sayin.’
