Reaping What She Sews
"I don't have a radio or electricity. My house doesn't have a floor. I only have two beds and my dishes. That's all."
By day, Maura worked in nice, well to do homes at night she would return to her children in the "real world" of poverty and sufferinga place she called home.
"The most difficult moments were when I only had a little piece of banana with salt to feed my children. That was the most difficult moment of my life - to be forced to tell my children, 'This is what we have today, banana with salt.'"
To say Maura was desperate doesn't begin to describe her condition. Her only income came from temporary house cleaning jobs for the wealthy. But she had three children to take care of, and an abusive husband who often stole her money to buy drugs.
"I began to think that the best solution was to kill myself. But when I saw my children I just couldn't."
"It was very difficult for us," said Keylin, Maura's daughter, "because we had to eat the same thing at every time of the day; in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the eveningwe didn't want it any more."
In her desperation, Maura began to reach out to the only one she knew could help. "I didn't want to continue living this kind of life. I repented of everything wrong I could have done, of all my sins, and received Jesus as my Lord and Savior in my heart. From that moment on my life was different."
And CBN was part of that difference! Because of your gifts, The 700 Club offices in Latin America reached out to Maura and her town. CBN provided a full year of job training for Maura and 30 other women, teaching them to sew. The total cost to train Maura with a skill that would last a lifetime under $20 a month.
"I learned how to make patterns, to cut shorts, to cut skirts, and now to cut blouses too." And although her sewing machine isn't the best, the training Maura received gives her what she needs to buy food for her family. She's even begun to use some of her income to build a new place to live -- a home she is building with her own hands!
"With the money I made, I used some to buy a pair of hinges and nails. And the rest of the money I used to buy food."
Maura is now teaching her daughter the skills CBN has taught her -- a gift that many other families who were part of the program will pass on to their children for generations to come!
"I told God that I didn't know how to repay Him for everything He has done for me, for all the changes I see in my family, in my own life, and now my house. And to CBN, Maura says, "For me, what you did, was a great help and blessing."
