From Heartbreak to Hope for Rosita

PUNTA CAIMANES, Guatemala - Rosita held tightly to her 2-year-old granddaughter as the floodwaters from the surging river dragged them downstream in the complete darkness.

Heavy rains in the Izabal region of Guatemala had caused the Sumach and Túnico rivers to grow rapidly, flooding several communities in the middle of the night and destroying bridges, roads and homes as it went.

Completely terrified, Rosita clutched the little girl to her chest but was struck by something in the rushing water and lost hold of the child.

Rosita screamed for help, desperate to save her granddaughter, but it was too late. Sometime later she was pulled from the water and lost consciousness. When she awoke in the hospital, the pain from the injuries she had suffered was nothing compared to the devastation she felt when she realized she had lost all seven members of her family and was the only survivor.

To bring hope to more than 200 victims of the recent disaster, Operation Blessing provided critical relief to Rosita's community, distributing food, bottled water, hygiene items and clothing.

Teams also provided medical care and treated villagers who had suffered injuries, including Rosita, and spent time comforting those who had lost loved ones.
