A Long, Tall Glass of Parasites and Infection

Digna lives with her 4-year-old daughter high in the Andes mountains of Peru. Her husband works far from home. Digna manages the house and animals. But her hardest job is collecting water for daily use.

Digna explained, “We have to go to a well that is about a 30-minute walk away. We carry water back in buckets.”

Digna makes the roundtrip journey to the open pit well every day of the year.  Some days, she makes two trips in order to have enough water for the animals.

“We have to get up very early. When the first well runs dry, we have to walk for two hours to get water,” said Digna.

Digna told us that everyone in the community knew the water was contaminated. A test by Operation Blessing confirmed it.

“When my daughter, Sophia, got sick, a doctor said she had parasites and a stomach infection from bad water,” Digna said.

Thanks to you, Operation Blessing built a community water system for Digna’s family. It provides fresh, purified water to their home.

Digna added, “Operation Blessing also built our family bathrooms with showers, a sink, and a tank, which holds lots of water.”

61 families benefitted with clean water, bathrooms, and showers from this community water project.

Sophia said, “I am very happy because I have clean water.”

Digna said, “Many thanks to Operation Blessing and the donors who have helped us. Thank you so much.”
