Police and pro-democracy protesters have been clashing in Hong Kong. At least 40 people were arrested.

Video shows police charging down a street to confront the demonstrators. The police used batons, riot shields, and pepper spray to remove protesters from a bridge.

Protesters chanting "I want true democracy" blocked traffic and tried to surround government headquarters, escalating their two-month-long campaign against Chinese intervention in Hong Kong.

The protesters have been wearing surgical masks, hard hats, and safety goggles for protection, but some have been injured by the police.

Last week authorities used an aggressive operation to clear out the protest camp on the busy streets of Hong Kong's crowded Mong Kok district, one of three protest zones around the semi-autonomous city.
