Reflection and Awe Lent Series - Freedom From Sin
“For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all time; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. So you too, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” –Romans 6:10-11 (NASB)
This week, we focus on the transformative freedom Christ has given us. Freedom from sin is not a single-threaded concept but a multifaceted gift that touches every aspect of our lives. Today, we reflect on freedom from sin.
From the moment humanity fell in the Garden of Eden, sin disrupted God’s design. Disobedience brought shame, brokenness, and a shift in our desires—leaving us enslaved to sin. On our own, there was no way to repair the damage. But God, in His mercy, sent Jesus to pay the ultimate price.
Jesus didn’t just repair what was broken—He made us new. The blood of Christ canceled our debt, broke the chains of slavery, and restored us to our Creator.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:
The old has gone, the new is here! –2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
This freedom is a present reality, empowering us to live each day in the strength and victory Christ has secured. Yet, we still wrestle with our flesh and the remnants of our old nature.
We have freedom of choice, which allows us to choose whether to act on temptations or turn away from sin.
Jesus is constantly growing and changing us to make us more like Himself. He sets us apart for a special purpose and molds us until He takes us home to heaven.
The molding process is called sanctification, and it’s the process of being shaped into the likeness of Christ, requiring daily surrender and reliance on the Holy Spirit. This involves yielding every aspect of your life—your thoughts, actions, desires, and plans—to the Lordship of Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide, convict, and empower you. It’s not a one-time decision but an ongoing posture of trust, obedience, and humility, acknowledging your daily need for God—it’s a journey, not a destination.
This process of sanctification is deeply tied to our freedom in Christ. Though we are no longer slaves to sin, we are continually invited to walk in the freedom He has secured for us. Each day, as we surrender to the Holy Spirit’s work within us, we experience the transformative power of that freedom—not just in our eternal destiny but in the choices, attitudes, and actions we take here and now.
As we continue our journey through Lent, let’s take time to reflect on the freedom Jesus has given us. This freedom isn’t just for eternity; it’s for today. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in living out this freedom, and let the knowledge of what Christ accomplished on the cross inspire gratitude and awe.
As Easter draws near, may the truth of His victory over sin and death deepen your faith and fill you with hope. Let this season remind you of the incredible joy of the resurrection and the life-changing power of Christ’s love.
