Cholesterol Drugs May Increase Diabetes Risk

Statin drugs, which people take to lower their cholesterol, could increase a person's risk of type-2 diabetes by 46 percent, according to a new study from Finland that followed nearly 9,000 men for almost six years.
 
The researchers said Statins appear to increase the risk of diabetes in several ways, including increasing someone's insulin resistance.

In the study, authors also pointed out that since the research was only conducted on white men, the finding may not necessarily apply to women or other ethnic groups.
    
Some experts believe the benefits of statins still outweigh the risks. One told Health Day News that each doctor and patient have to discuss and weigh the risks and benefits to decide the proper treatment.
