Researchers from Johns Hopkins University say middle aged people with diabetes could be at a higher risk for dementia.

That's according to a new study published in the journal, Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers used data from the Antherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, which followed close to 16,000 middle aged adults in the United States.

They found diabetes in midlife was associated with a 19 percent greater cognitive decline over 20 years compared to those with no diabetes.

Scientists aren't sure why there's a link between the two health problems, but findings from the study match up with previous research.

Researchers say preventing diabetes and controlling glucose levels may protect against metal decline later in life.
