America's ambassador to South Korea is in stable condition following a knife attack at a breakfast meeting in Seoul Thursday.

Eyewitnesses say a man shouted "South and North Korea should be reunified" as he came from behind and attacked Ambassador Mark Lippert.

Lippert was just starting to eat his breakfast and preparing to deliver a lecture about the prospects for peace on the Peninsula when the attack occurred.

Security officers quickly apprehended the knife-wielding attacker.

Doctors say the ambassador needed 80 stitches to close a wound on his face. An injury to his left arm also damaged nerves.

The U.S. State Department has condemned the attack.
