Ukraine Deadline Lapses, No Sign of Withdrawal
Ukrainian government troops and rebels supported by Russia have failed to meet the deadline to start pulling back their heavy weapons from the front lines.
Last week's ceasefire agreement called for that withdrawal to begin Tuesday.
But now both sides say they will only begin the pullout after the other party does.
"As soon as the militants cease fire, the Ukrainian side will begin to withdraw heavy weaponry from the front line," Ukrainian military spokesman Anatoliy Stelmakh said in televised comments Tuesday.
Rebel leader Andrei Purgin told a reporter that separatists plan to discuss the withdrawal with representatives of Ukraine, Russia and the group monitoring the ceasefire. That group is called the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe.
