Anthem Hacked, Millions of Customers' Data at Risk
Anthem, the second largest health insurance provider, has been hacked, the company said in a statement Thursday.
The breach, which Anthem offcials are calling a "very sophisticated" cyber attack, has put as many as 80 million customers' data at risk.
"We are still investigating to determine how many were impacted. At this point we believe it was tens of millions," USA Today quoted Cindy Wakefield, an Anthem spokeswoman.
Meanwhile, Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish assured customers the matter is being taken very seriously.
"Anthem's own associates' personal information -- including my own -- was accessed during this security breach. We join in your concern and frustration and I assure you that we are working around the clock to do everything we can to further secure your data," he said.
Anthem recently changed its name from Wellpoint. It runs Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in more than a dozen states.
The FBI is investigating the cyber security breach.
