Every day, 5-year-old Ashley sits on a sidewalk watching her older sister play with the neighborhood children. Most of the time she is too weak to join them.
Ashley and her sister live with their grandparents. The couple doesn’t have much money and can’t afford to take Ashley to a doctor.
“Every day, I worry about money and how we’re going to feed our grandchildren,” Estrella says. “I pray that God will give us strength, good health, and long life so that we can take care of them.”
When a neighbor noticed Ashley sitting on the porch all the time, she told Estrella about a free Operation Blessing medical clinic.
At the clinic, Ashley was given a free medical checkup, x-rays, and lab tests. The OB team discovered Ashley was malnourished, had tonsillitis, and chronic ear infections. A strong antibiotic helped with the ear infections and swollen throat.
Now, Ashley goes to the food program we started in her neighborhood. Forty-one other children are fed every day, along with Ashley.
To help Ashley’s grandparents make extra money for food and future medical expenses, Operation Blessing gave Estrella a grant to start a small stall selling food to neighbors.
Today, Ashley is a healthy and happy girl who is doing well in school. She can hardly wait to get home to play with her sister and new friends.
“I’m very happy that I can join in the games now,” Ashley says.
“It’s a joy to see Ashley playing with the other children,” Estrella says. “Thank you!”
