When the Calling Feels Overwhelming, but God Is Faithful
I found myself in a situation that was way above my head. When my church asked me to pioneer a work among Spanish‑speaking refugees, I said yes with a willing heart. I knew God was calling me into this.
But soon I felt the weight of my own expectations for results. Panic wanted to creep in, and I wondered, what on earth have I gotten myself into? I wrestled with my feelings of not being good enough for the task. Then the truth sank in… this was God’s idea, not mine! He had only asked for my obedience, the results were in His hands!
Paul also knew Whose idea was driving him. He opens the book of 1 Corinthians, and honestly, most of his letters, with similar wording, This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus …(1 Corinthians 1:1 NLT)
In the book of Acts, we read of the beginning of his missionary adventures.
One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.” So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way. (Acts 13:2-3)
There’s something powerful—and steadying—about knowing deep down that you are exactly where God has called you to be. Paul and Barnabas had that kind of certainty. Before the Church laid hands on them, God had already whispered His assignment into their hearts. The Church didn’t give them their calling; it simply confirmed what God had already begun.
And that matters, especially when the journey gets hard.
Because when you know God is the One who set you on your path, you don’t have to panic when everything around you feels uncertain. You don’t have to interpret opposition as failure or confusion as misdirection. Instead, you can look up and say with honesty and courage:
“Lord, everything seems to be against me right now… but I trust You, because this was Your idea, not mine.”
That kind of assurance doesn’t make the road easy—Paul and Barnabas experienced that—but it anchors your heart. It reminds you that you’re not wandering. You’re not out there trying to make something happen in your own strength. You are simply walking out what God has already prepared for you.
And when the pressure rises, when discouragement creeps in, when you feel stretched thin or misunderstood—that calling becomes the place your soul returns to. Like Paul and Barnabas, you can press on because you know you were sent. You can endure because you know God led you here. You can keep going because the One who called you is faithful, and He will finish what He started.
You are where He wants you.
He is with you every step of the way.
Father, I thank You for having a plan and for allowing me to be part of it. When I face moments that feel bigger than me, remind me that You placed me here on purpose. Help me to rest, trusting You above what I see and experience. Holy Spirit, be my encouragement, guide, and strength every step of the way. I pray all this is the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
