- Welcome to the Superbook show.
I have a question for you.
What happens when you tell an egg a joke?
It cracks up. (laughs)
(drum sound)
(whoosh sound)
In honor of Easter, I thought today,
we should talk about eggs.
That's right, the ultimatefood item of Easter.
Eggs have been a symbol of spring
since way before Jesus was born.
But, when Christiansstarted celebrating Easter
they jumped on that symbol.
I mean, think about it.
The egg is all about new life.
Jesus's death and resurrectionis all about new life.
- Mary, Mary.
Jesus is risen.
The tomb is empty.
For years we've heard his message.
Now we see it.
God so loved the worldthat he gave his only son.
So that whoever believesin him, will not die,
but have everlasting life.
- More than just a symbol of spring,
of life coming backfrom the cold of winter,
the egg, it has so much more to say.
- (gibberish sounds)
- What?
- (gibberish sounds)
- Good idea!
(Trumpet sounds)
- Think of the way a chick is born.
It starts in its shell, in the darkness,
and then breaks out of its shell
into the light of day.
Now, think about the first Easter.
The very son of God, dead and buried,
in the darkness of a tomb,
breaks through the light of the world.
(spiritual music)
- Mary.
(spiritual music)
- Ah, Jesus.
- Eggs! For Easter, wecolor and decorate our eggs.
This tradition started in the 13th century
which was 800 years ago.
It was before I was born, anyway.
Historians think thisstarted because people gave
up eating eggs for lent,a time before Easter.
And people gave up eatingthings on lent because
it was a way to remember God's sacrifice,
a way to prepare for Easter.
So, no eggs for 40 days.
But, you know what madeit even more special
when it was time to eat them?
Decorations! (celebration music)
Woo Hoo! Party time! Yeah!
(whistling sound through the air)
Where did the egg go?
Maybe I should go hunt for it?
Just kidding. It's right here.
The egg as a symbol mayhave predated Christianity
but the Easter egg hunt is all Christian.
Historians suggests that Martin Luther,
a famous Christian reformer,
actually came up with the idea.
He invented it as a gamefor his congregation.
Back then, the men of thechurch would hide the eggs
and the women and childrenwould go look for them.
Eggy? Eggy?
Where did that undecorated egg go? Eggy?
(spiritual music)
This was a reference tothe first Easter morning
when it was the women who firstdiscovered the risen savior.
Eggs! So much more thanthe middle of a McMuffin.
Speaking of things thatare more than they appear,
knock, knock?
- (group of voices) Who's there?
- Omelet.
- (group of voices) Omelet who?
- Omelet smarter than I look.
- (group laughter)
