Faith vs Works - The Superbook Show

Naomi and Lawrence answer a viewer’s question about what saves us grace or works? Read Transcript

- Hey everyone.

- Thank you for joining us

for another episode of "Keeping It Real."

- Reina wrote in and asked us,

"My friend says if youdon't do good works,

you're not really saved.

But I thought we're only savedthrough faith, not works.

Am I right or is she?"

- Great question Reina.

Well, obviously the answer is...

- What's the matter?Obviously, Reina's right.

- Well, her friend wasn'tentirely wrong either.

- What do you mean her friend isn't wrong?

The Bible clearly states,

"God saved you by grace when you believed.

It's not a credit to us,it's a gift from God."

- Right? But-- Oh, hold on. I'm not done.

"Salvation is not a reward

for the good things that we've done,

so that none of us may boast about it."

- You're absolutely right.

We're only saved by grace through faith.

But look at how Reina worded her question,

"If you don't do good worksyou must not really be saved."

She's not saying that if you do good work

that's how do you get saved.

- Okay. So what's your point?

- My point is in James 2:26.

"Just as the body is dead without breath,

so also faith is dead without good works."

- So we do need works to be saved?

- No, you and Reina were right.

Only faith in Jesus saves us.

Our good works are theevidence of our faith,

and James gives a reallygreat example earlier.

- "What good is it dearbrothers and sisters,

if you say you have faith butdon't show it by your actions?

Can that kind of faith save anyone?

Suppose you see a brother or sister

who has no food or clothing and you say,

'Goodbye and have a goodday. Stay warm and eat well.'

But then you don't give thatperson any food or clothing,

what good does that do?

So you see faith by itself isn't enough

unless it produces good deeds,it is dead and useless."

- Do you understand a little more now?

- Yeah. It makes a lot of sense.

If we have a relationship with Jesus,

then people should be ableto tell by our actions.

- Exactly.

- We can have faith and pray for people,

but it doesn't do a whole lot of good

unless we apply ourfaith in a practical way.

- If we claim to be Christiansbut no one can tell,

we may need to look atour relationship with God

a little bit closer.

- Maybe even find someoneto hold us accountable

to grow in our walk with Christ,

and encourage us to do good deeds.

- Having faith and doing good deeds

aren't ideas that should beconflicting against each other.

- It turns out they go hand in hand.

- Once we're saved,

we should be overflowingwith Christ's love.

And we should want to show that to others

through our actions.

- Faith plus works equals anexcellent witness for Christ.

- Yeah, you can say that.

- Reina, you're right.

The only way to be saved isthrough faith in Christ Jesus.

- And as Christians who have faith,

we were created to do good deeds.

And if others can see that, that's a major problem.

- So you have faith? Great.

Now what are you gonna do with it?

- His Word is forever life.

- Thanks for joining us.

- If you're looking fora more practical way

to apply your faith in your everyday life,

we encourage you to read the Book of James

on the Superbook Bible App.

- Alright.(crew laughing)

You're absolutely right.

(crew laughing)

You're absolutely right.

We're only saved by faith through grace.

- [Crew Member] No.- No, I did it again!

Oh my gosh.

Once we're saved,

we should be overflowingwith Christ's love,

and want to show that actionto others through our actions.

(all laughing)

Show that action to our actionthrough action with action

to our action with action others.
