Valentine - The Superbook Show

Did you know that Valentine's Day has roots in church history? Read Transcript

- (sighs) Valentine's Day,

the most romantic day of the year.

To celebrate, peopleidentify the ones they love

and give them a valentine, like a card or a gift.

(laughs) I love chocolate!

(teeth crunching)Yum!

I have a challenge for you.

This year, instead of giving a valentine,

try being a valentine.(wondrous music)

(dramatic music)

We know that Valentine's Day was named

after the historical figure, Valentine,

but historians can't seem to agree

on who exactly that person was.

The consensus seems to beValentine was a believer

in Jesus during the reign

of Emperor Claudius Gothicus.(triumphant music)

(gasps) That would makesuch a great band name!

(gasps) I bet they'd playreally dark music, too!

(heavy metal guitar music)

Oh, sorry, I digress.

Gothicus was very, veryunfriendly to Christians.

Valentine, on the other hand,

was very, very helpful to Christians.

He performed wedding ceremonies in secret

for people that wanted toget married before God.

And, he continued preaching about Jesus

even after being warnedby the Roman government.

He even preached toEmperor Gothicus himself--

- [Valentine] My fellow Romans--

- which resulted in him getting arrested

and being sentenced to death.(dramatic drum music)

While in jail, Valentine prayed

for his jailer's blind daughter

and God healed her!(triumphant music)

(audience cheering)

The jailer and his entirehousehold converted

to Christianity.

Right before his execution,

Valentine wrote a noteencouraging the jailer's daughter

in her new faith.

He signed it, "From your Valentine,"

and that's where we get the idea

to write, well, Valentines to each other.

What we know aboutValentine is just a legend,

but I think there arelegends that can inspire us.

Valentine stood up forJesus, he encouraged others

and he was willing to die for his faith.

I love love notes and the chocolate

as much as the next person,

however, if you want to honorValentine on Valentine's Day,

write an encouraging noteto a fellow believer.

Tell someone about Jesus.

Give time to promoting the Good News.

(loving bell music)

Be a valentine. (laughs)

His word is forever alive.

(dramatic music)

Another way to be aValentine, share the Bible!

Tell a friend about thefree Superbook Bible App

and maybe even agree to read it together.

I can't believe I'm saying this,

but that's even better than

chocolate.- Wow!

- Happy Valentine's Day!(Heavenly harp music)

It's better than chocolate, so much!

No, it's not.

Wait, yeah, it is better than chocolate,

chocolate's not better than it.

(laughs) I'm sorry, that'swhat I was trying to say.

- [Director] Other than that--

- I'll take the chocolates, too.

Chocolate!

(grunts)

(roars) Okay! (laughs)

- [Director] Official last look!

- Official! (laughs)

(laughs)

- [Director] Good!
