- That's right, Pat, the President took
a controversially strong position against
what many Conservativesbelieve is a revolution
against America's history, its values,
and a threat to the country's freedoms.
Dale Hurd has that story.
- In speeches over the weekend,
President Trump attacked theso-called cancel culture,
which seeks to erasepart of American history.
He denounced it as aleft-wing cultural revolution,
and said we only kneel to God.
After weeks of rioting, burning cities,
and toppled monuments,President Trump made clear
he opposes those trying to rewrite
and eradicate American history and values.
- We will never allow an angry mob
to tear down our statues, erase our history,
indoctrinate our childrenor trample on our freedoms.
- [Dale] Speaking at Mount Rushmore,
which some on the left see asa symbol of white supremacy
and would like to destroy,President Trump declared
that the monument will never be desecrated
and America's heroes never forgotten.
- Make no mistake.
This left-wing culturalrevolution is designed
to overthrow the American revolution.
- [Dale] The President warnedthat the left-wing movement
is attacking America's basic freedoms.
- In our schools, our newsrooms,
even our corporate boardrooms,
there is a new far-left fascism
that demands absolute allegiance.
If you do not speak its language,
perform its rituals, recite its mantras,
and follow its commandments,
then you will be censured, banished, blacklisted,
persecuted, and punished.
- Attacks from the Democrats
and the media were fast and furious.
Even before the Mount Rushmore speech,
in a tweet that was later deleted,
the official DemocraticTwitter account accused Trump
of glorifying white supremacy.
The New York Times accused Trump
of using the Mount Rushmore speech
to deliver a divisive culture war message.
A CNN reporter calledMount Rushmore a monument
of two slave owners anda land wrestled away
from Native Americans.
But CNN had no problemwhen Bernie Sanders gushed
at a visit to Mount Rushmore in 2016,
that it representedAmerica at its very best.
Meanwhile, more statues are coming down.
Christopher Columbus wasthrown into Baltimore Harbor
over the weekend, and inRochester, New York, the statue
of black abolitionist FrederickDouglass was vandalized.
The controversy is not likely to stop,
as left-wing protestors arelikely to target more statues
across the country,
and this is shaping up topossibly be a major issue
in this year's election.
