- [Announcer] This is CBN NewsWatch.
- And thanks for joiningus for CBN NewsWatch;
I'm Heather Sells.
There is growing concernabout Hurricane Dorian today.
The storm continues to gain strength
as it heads towardsFlorida's Atlantic Coast.
President Trump has approvedan emergency declaration
for the state, and Mark Martinjoins us now with more; Mark.
- Heather, the NationalHurricane Center predicts
Hurricane Dorian willcome ashore early Tuesday
near West Palm Beach.
The agency is still predicting it will be
an extremely dangerousCategory 4 hurricane
with 130 mile-per-hour winds.
Florida's governor put hisstate's residents on alert.
- This is potentially a multi-day event
where it will churnslowly across the state.
That, obviously, createsa whole host of issues.
- [Mark] 17 million people
are potentially in the path of Dorian.
Traffic filled streets.
Residents are scrambling to get gas,
water, sandbags, and other supplies.
At one store, people waited in a line
that wrapped around the building.
- It's gonna be a big storm.
Wind, rain, surge.
Don't take this storm lightly.
- There's gas stationsthat have run out of fuel.
We, in the emergency declaration,
waived service and truckrates for fuel trucks
so that we can increasethe capacity of fuel
that's being brought in.
- FEMA is working with state agencies
to get additional suppliesof fuel into Florida quickly,
and while officials preparefor the storm on the ground,
others do their work in the air.
NOAA sent the first all-femalethree-pilot flight crew
over the hurricane to gather data
on a reconnaissance mission.
Back on the ground, theFlorida National Guard
is also helping.
Several thousand soldiers andairmen have been deployed.
In addition, the Navy orderedsome ships out of the water
as a result of Dorian.
President Trump has alerted the nation
that Dorian could be an absolute monster.
By issuing the emergency declaration,
he ordered federal assistance
to help state and localefforts responding to Dorian.
Heather, back to you.
- Thanks, Mark, and joining uswith more on Hurricane Dorian
is WeatherBELL meteorologist Joe Bastardi.
Joe, tell us more aboutwhat we know right now
about when and where Dorian will land.
- Well, well I have no differencefrom the Hurricane Center;
that's our path from the pastcouple days and this morning;
their path's down theretoward West Palm Beach,
so I can't argue with myself,although sometimes I do.
But, you know, I want to pointout a couple of things here.
First of all, this is amajor, major storm coming.
There's no question about it.
It's gonna devastate the northern Bahamas
and then it's gonna move very, very slowly
up the coast all the wayand it may be a hurricane
all the way to Cape Hatteras
or Norfolk, for instance, Virginia Beach.
That's the first thing.
Second thing, though,
let's look at somepossibly positive aspects.
If it goes in north of Miami like that,
I'm already reading stuffabout the king tides
and the storm surge.
Miami will get a strong northwest wind,
and maybe they have blowout tides,
so you know, you build a city on a sandbar
that was made 100 years ago,
things are gonna happen bad sometimes.
The other thing is, too,
is unlike Michael, and unlike Andrew,
this is not gonna hitthe coast moving fast.
It's gonna be moving very, very slowly.
Now that's bad, of course, because the siege is prolonged,
but it also means that the storm
will be drawing in dryer air off Florida
into the center as it approaches the coast
and also, it will upwell thewater that's underneath it.
You see, these hurricanesneed fresh warm water
so when they move 10, 12, 15 miles an hour
they can continue to intensify.
They start moving five, six miles an hour,
you tend to see them weaken
just before they reach the coast.
There was a classic storm;
well, actually, it wasn'tclassic, it was the only major hit
in the old coast of NorthFlorida in 400 years,
that was Hurricane Dora in '64.
And Dora stalled off thenorth coast of Florida
before coming in and weakened.
So if this thing really moves slowly,
there's a chance it's off its peak.
By that I mean instead of being a four,
it could arrive as a three,
but there's no question abouthow severe this is gonna be.
- Hmm, okay, so it could be athree; that's a possibility.
Tell us a little moreabout what other states
really need to be on alert right now,
and this sounds like a multi-day event.
(Joe laughing)
- It's kind of interestingin that, you know,
one thing I've been blessedwith in looking at the weather
is I can see stuff comingfrom several days away,
that's what we do for our clients.
In this particular case, I've already,
I actually am havingtrouble sleeping at night
'cause I'm constantlythinking of these things
and we're only four days in.
I have another week to go.
By that I mean, look,
this is gonna be overnortheast Florida Wednesday;
Georgia, South Carolina Thursday;
and it will make its approach,it's closest approach
to, you know, Virginia Beach, for instance, probably Friday.
So it's gonna be a prolonged siege
all the way up the Southeast Coast.
Now, there have been worse storms
as far as distributinghurricane-force winds
all the way up the coast.
This is gonna distributehurricane-force winds,
in my opinion, from Florida
to North Carolina, perhaps Virginia.
But Hurricane Donna in 1960?
Every state on the EastCoast from Florida to Maine
had hurricane-force winds,
so there are benchmarkstorms that we do look at.
- Yeah, well, it's a lot to take in.
I appreciate your expertise, and we will be in touch.
Thank you, Joe Bastardi.
- Well, I appreciate you having me on.
- Well, faith-based groupsare packing up this week
and they are hitting the road.
They are ready to respondto whoever will need help
in the aftermath of Dorian.
Operation Blessing deployed this morning
heading for Ocala, Florida inthe central part of the state.
The team will partnerwith local churches there
to mobilize volunteersand help those in need.
- The overall mission is toend human suffering down there
in the disaster-related area,
and how we do that is bysetting up distribution centers
that have non-perishable items
along with hygiene productsand cleaning supplies
to hand out to the community.
Not only that, but weoffer free, hot meals
to the community and thevolunteers that show up.
Those volunteers are critical
and the lifeblood of what we do
down in disaster relief area.
- Other faith-basedgroups heading to Florida
include Samaritan'sPurse, The Convoy of Hope,
and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief.
Sam Porter is the National Director
for Southern Baptist Disaster Relief
and he joins us now with the latest.
Sam, thank you for joining us.
You've been getting readyfor Dorian all week,
and I know you're oneof the largest providers
of disaster relief in the country.
Tell us about how you are partnering
with everyone from FEMA tovolunteers across the country
to coordinate a response to this storm.
- Well, thank you for having us, Heather.
Yes, it's a real cooperativeeffort across the
what we call the disaster world,
and we work very closely with FEMA,
state emergency management operations,
and then also breaking downthe counties and cities,
and also we work very closely
with the other non-profit organizations.
I know Anthony, your directorthere for Operation Blessing,
and we have a very good relationship
and we play very well togetherin the sandbox as we say.
- That's good.
Tell us about thesupplies you're assembling
and how you plan to helpvictims of the storm.
- Yes, our Send Relief,we have a Send Relief
which is the compassion arm
of the North American Mission Board.
The Send Relief part of theNorth American Mission Board
representing the SouthernBaptist Convention,
all the churches of Southern Baptist,
is in Ashland, Kentucky,
and they are actuallyloading supplies right now
with rolled roofing whichis temporary tarping,
temporary roofing for homes
after their roof's beencompromised by the storm.
Then we'll also haveother tools and equipment
to also cover up, to work withchainsaw teams clearing trees
and tree debris from homes and yards,
as well as with this much rain,
we know there's gonna be amassive amount of flooding,
and so we'll have a lot offlood relief cleaning supplies
and we will send that.
We'll stage that probablysomewhere in the Atlanta area
to where we can get in,
but as large as this is going to become,
we're gonna be puttingsupplies in at least primarily,
to start with, five locations, but we'll put in supplies
to every place we have a disaster team.
- Sam, I know we're prayingthat this storm will diminish.
We're praying for those whomight be affected by it.
How can we pray for you and your team
as you're making decisions?
- Well, one, we wantto first pray for those
that are in the path of the storm.
That is our number one concern.
And then that they'll have safety,
but then also, we just want to pray
that Southern Baptist Disaster Relief
and the support of Send Relief, which represents, again,
all the Southern Baptist churchesacross the United States,
that we'll have volunteersthat will be ready to serve
and just to pray to that end.
I would really challenge
all the Southern Baptistchurches out there
to be ready to helpsupport your national team.
We have disaster relief volunteers
in all 50 states and all the territories,
and so we just pray thatwe will be able to respond
in a very significantway to help the people.
- Yeah, to what sounds likea very significant storm.
All right, Sam Porter withSouthern Baptist Disaster Relief,
thanks for your time.- Thank you.
- Well turning to other news,
police are encouraging Hong Kong residents
to stay away from anynon-authorized rallies tomorrow
after authorities banned a major march,
warning that those caught couldface a five-year jail term.
Hong Kong pro-democracyactivist Joshua Wong
was arrested yesterday.
He was charged with incitingothers to join a protest
outside a police station in June.
Wong says he is not afraid of white terror
and that he plans to continue protesting.
He and fellow activist AgnesChow were released on bail
after being arrested andcharged earlier in the day.
And CBN Senior InternationalReporter Dale Hurd
joins us now by Skype.
Dale, I understand thatyou predicted last week
that the leaders of theHong Kong protest movement
would be arrested.
What led you to that thinkingand what do you think now?
- Heather, I was on a radio program
and I, to me, the thinkingof Beijing and the logic,
you know, the evil logic of Beijing,
the way this, I expect, to end
is for the leaders to simply disappear,
to get sucked into the Chinese, you know,
the country of China just tobe removed from Hong Kong.
They can't have another Tiananmen Square.
They can't have a lotof bodies in the street,
and so I think the movementwill be decapitated,
then, today, we saw two leadersget picked up by police cars
and was thankful to seethem be released, though.
- Joshua Wong mentioned white terror.
Talk about what is meant, right now, by white terror.
- He's not talking about white people,
he's talking about state terror
and he has reason to be concerned
because China practicesthis so-called state terror,
white terror, on its own people
every day on a immense scale,
and these young people are very courageous
and they're taking a lot ofrisks, what they're doing.
- We've seen video ofprotestors singing praise songs,
praying; how would youcharacterize the importance
of the Christian faith to this movement?
- Yeah, you know, I wouldsay it's extraordinary
except we serve an extraordinary God,
and so it's just a blessing,it's a wonderful thing.
This goes back to 2014, andthis can't be overstated.
You know, sometimes we kind of,
we're kind of hoping Christianityis the center of something
but it really is at thecenter of these protests
and it makes a lot of sense
because communism wasa movement against God.
It is God-less, and HongKong was, in a sense,
formed by missionariesalong with merchants,
and so it was a bastion of Christianity,
and so here we are in 2019
with communism versus Christianity.
- Fascinating.
All right, Dale Hurd, thanks for your insights.
- Thank you.
- Well, in Africa, morethan 2,000 people have died
from an Ebola outbreak in theDemocratic Republic of Congo
and that is the largest number of deaths
since the two-year outbreak in West Africa
that began in 2014 where11,000 people died.
The World Health Organizationsays the Ebola outbreak
is a public health emergencyof international concern.
The number of religiouslyunaffiliated people in America
is on the rise.
Up next, which political party
could use that information to score votes.
(cinematic thematic music)
- [Terry] Remember for a moment
what it was like to be a child.
You believed every story you were told.
You saw a world full ofendless possibilities.
What stories will the world's orphaned
and at-risk children believe?
We believe the Bible tells
the only story truly worth believing.
We believe that every child
should have the opportunity to dream,
the chance to take challenges
and turn them into possibilities,
the chance to stand onthe promises of God,
to recognize their place inthe greatest story ever told.
They have their whole lives ahead of them.
Theirs is a world ofendless possibilities.
They are looking for a story to believe.
We will tell them that story.

The resolution noted that 70% of the group
voted for Democrats in 2018,
and that with targeted outreach,
the religiously unaffiliated
could deliver millions of morevotes for Democrats in 2020.
Well, the religiously unaffiliated,
or those who identifywith no religious group,
are also called Nones, that is spelled N-O-N-E-S,
and it's a group that's growing
and the question for churches right now
is how to reach them.
Amanda grew up as a None.
She never went to church orspoke with anyone who did.
My mom always told me that we don't talk
to people who believe in God
'cause they're weird or they're different.
- [Heather] Craig, on the other hand,
grew up going to church buttook a stand in high school.
- At that point I said,"I'm done with the church.
"I don't want to go.
"I don't see any benefit,
"I don't see any reasonwhy I should be going."
- Both Craig and Amandarepresent a growing group.
The Pew Research Center found
that almost a quarter of US adults
say they either question God's existence
or that their religionin nothing in particular.
That's up significantlyin just the last 10 years
with these Nones now representing36 million Americans.
Pew also found that athird of young people
fall into this group and high numbers
live in the Northwest and Northeast.
So why are so many Americansdisconnecting from church?
We came here to New England to find out
and to learn what churches here
are doing to bring them back.
- It's a new phenomenonwe're trying to understand.
- [Heather] Dr. SharonKetcham at Gordon College
outside of Boston and other experts
are trying to figureout why a new generation
is so anti-church.
What we do know:
These Nones don't believein their faith anymore
or the need for church.
Craig says that's what hethought in his twenties.
- Really it was, okay, youknow, yes, I believe in you God
but I'm gonna do things my way
and as long as I'm a good person,
and as long as I do enoughgood deeds that will be enough.
- [Heather] Others say they're unsure
about so-called organizedreligion or just don't go.
- Church never crossed my mind
as in something that I needed to do.
- [Heather] Ketcham sees a bigger picture:
A culture in which people,as consumers, judge church
based on what it providesfor their personal needs.
- We then have theamplification of me and Jesus
and a reduction of thelarger understanding
of what the community of faith is about.
- [Heather] Another part ofthe problem, says Ketcham,
is simply the growing number of choices.
- There were days that we lived in
where communities were given in our lives,
but today, community's voluntary.
I can choose whateverchurch, whatever small group,
whatever program meets my personal needs.
- I think this may be one--
- [Heather] Pastor ChadBraswell is well aware
of those who are disconnected,
but says he's not discouraged.

lights shine brighter,

I think some people just feel
they can't live up to that expectation
and the guilt of what they'vedone or what they are into.
- [Heather] A focus on gracedrew in Amanda her first time.
The single mom remembersa co-worker's invitation
to an Easter service
and how she cried throughout the sermon.

I was embarrassed; I went out back
and I got my daughter from kids' church,
and I'm like, "We arenever coming back here."

Here with this week's trendingstories from Faithwire,
CBN's Jessica Chacko and Dan Andros.
- Well, over a hundred thousand people
attended the annual SoCal Harvest Crusade
in Angel Stadium over the weekend.
This was the 30th year of the event,
making it one of the longest-runningevangelistic crusades
in the nation.
Dan Andros, Managing Editor of Faithwire,
is here to tell us more about the event.
- Dan.- Yeah, it's amazing.
This is a humongous event andevery year we're blown away
by the numbers.
As you said, hundredsof thousands of people
over the weekend there,
and thousands making aproclamation of faith.
Really, an amazing statement,
and really one that often gets ignored
by the mainstream media,
but Pastor Greg Laurie hasbeen running this event.
You have all kinds of bigacts there like Lecrae,
Jeremy Camp, all the big names are there.
Really great to see, youknow, a bit of a revival.
I mean, people talk aboutChristianity being on the decline
and how we're being pushed aside,
but just because the media isignoring some of these things
doesn't mean they're not happening.
Obviously CBN and Faithwire
are always gonna cover stuff like this,
even if the mainstream media ignores it,
but lots of people makinga proclamation of faith
in the name of Jesus andit's really cool to see.
- Well, if you're lookingfor family-friendly,
faith-based films this fall,we've got a list of three
that you're gonna want to check out; Dan.
- Yeah, well, faith-based movies
are not in short supply these days.
Again, it's another one of those things
you're not always gonna see the publicity
from the media on some of these movies
and we've got a couple for ya
that you should check outand consider supporting
because people like to oftencriticize Christian films
and say well, maybe theproduction quality isn't as great.
Well, we're growing and they're growing,
and so the way to help themget better is to support them,
so here's a couple thatyou can do that with.
This first one is called "Overcomer."
It's from the Kendrickbrothers who, of course,
brought you "Fireproof" and "Courageous"
and "They Might Be Giants,"and movies like that,
and "Fireproof," of course.
So this one's called "Overcomer."
It's about a small highschool basketball team.
And the town faces devastation
as a manufacturing plant closes down.
It forces them to sortof re-shift their roles
and re-find where theyget their identities from
and so it's a greatjourney that all Christians
can get a little bit of a benefit from.
The next one's "Catching Faith 2,"
and this one features a person
who we've written about onFaithwire and CBN as well,
an ex-Victoria's Secretmodel, Nicole Weider, is in it
and this one shares the story of a family
who's gone through a seriesof unfortunate circumstances,
so something that lotsof people can relate to.
With your family, when you'regoing through difficult times,
how do you deal with that?
This movie speaks to that.
And finally, "Finding Grace."
It is the story of a familywho's left devastated
after the mom abandons them.
Again, another relatable story,
and to see it dealt within a Christian manner
is something that wecould all benefit from.
- Well, thanks, Dan.
