'The Baby in the Womb Is a Person': Alabama Aims Straight at Roe, Outlaws Nearly All Abortions

- [Charlene] After a contentious debate,
the Alabama Senate passed a bill
banning most abortions in the state.
The bill provides no exemptions
except in cases wherethere's a serious health risk
to the unborn child's mother.
It also makes performingan abortion a felony.
Supporters are hoping appeals
will take it to the Supreme Court,
to challenge the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision
which legalized abortion nationwide.
- Why we were trying tokeep it just as it was
was to address the issue thatRoe vs. Wade was decided on,
which is: Is that babyin the womb a person?
- I apologize to the women of Alabama
for this archaic law that we passed.
- [Charlene] Alabamafollows a handful of states
that have recently enactedlaws banning abortion
if a fetal heartbeat is detected,
usually as early as six weeks.
Abortion supporters
are stepping up thefight on the state level.
Lawmakers in Vermont voting
to amend the state constitutionto protect abortion
at any stage of pregnancy for any reason.
Pro-lifers say gains inthe pro-life movement
have abortion advocates inVermont and elsewhere worried.
- There's an optimism inthe pro-life movement,
and a pessimism now inthe pro-abortion movement.
They're seeing the changesat the federal level,
especially with the Supreme Court.
They're seeing the actionsthat President Trump is doing,
and they're seeing that after47 years of Roe v. Wade,
and the devastation that it's caused.
- Republican Governor Kay Ivey
says she wants tothoroughly review the bill
before signing it into law.
