- [Announcer] This is CBN Newswatch.

- And thank you so much forjoining us for this edition

of CBN Newswatch on thisFriday, February 1st.

I'm Efrem Graham.

Ahead today, more reactionto that failed bill

in Virginia protectingabortions as Republicans,

including President DonaldTrump have blasted the measure.

And polls show the public does not

support late-term abortions.

And what will happen inthe failing socialist

country of Venezuela?

We're gonna show you what couldbe the determining factor.

Plus, a look at this Sunday's Superbowl,

the game itself and the Christianfaith of many NFL players.

All those stories andmuch ahead in this edition

of CBN Newswatch.

We want to begin thishour with the fallout

from the Democratic abortionmeasure in Virginia.

Republicans from across the country

have blasted the measure.

And this bill, along with NewYork's recent abortion law

could make abortion a majorissue in next year's elections.

And some pro-lifers saythe measure, like the one

proposed in Virginia areactually a good sign.

Our Caitlyn Burke is on this story.

- [Caitlin] Pro-lifers andRepublicans from around

the country blasted theDemocratic bill in Virginia

which would allow abortions to take place

up until the day of birth.

- The pro-abortion leaders in these states

are proving once and for all, what they're really about.

And that's abortionwhenever, even up until

the moment of birth and even after birth.

- [Caitlin] PresidentTrump spoke out about the

proposed legislation as well, saying during an interview

with the Daily Caller, that it would lift

the whole pro-lifemovement like never before.

Hawkins also believes thelegislation is actually

a good sign for the pro-life movement.

- Abortion advocatesare showing their hand.

They are so afraid that Roeand Doe are going to fall

and fall very soon, that they'regoing to Democrat states,

states where they feellike they have a stronghold

to pass this outrageous legislation

to make sure abortion'slegal in their state

once Roe falls.

- [Caitlin] Meanwhile,a Democratic co-sponsor

has backed away hersupport of the legislation

writing in an email that shedidn't exercise due diligence

by closely examiningthe language of the bill

she was attaching her name to.

And Virginia Governor,Ralph Northam, a pediatric

neurologist, is defending his own comments

in support of the bill.

Critics said his positionon what could happen

to a child after birth, amounted to infanticide.

But Northam said Thursday, his comments

had been mischaracterized.

None of the Democraticlawmakers running for President

in 2020 have commented onthe Virginia abortion bill.

But many of them are co-sponsors of a bill

called the Women's Health Protection Act,

which would override state restrictions

on third trimester abortions.

- The majority of Americansaren't even anywhere near that.

That's an extremist position to hold.

In fact, a poll we just had released

shows that only 7% ofMillennials, the largest voting

block in America, were inline with this thinking

on abortion, of abortion all nine months

and taxpayer funded.

- [Caitlin] And Galluppolling indicates Democrats

are out of step with thepublic on this issue.

Caitlyn Burke, CBN News.

- The worst Polar Vortexfreeze is over with.

Accuweather forecasterspredicting a temperature swing

of some 40 to 80 degreesin the days ahead.

At least 13 people died because

of the extreme winter weather.

It was a rough week acrossthe nation from the Dakotas

to North and Southeast,windchills reaching

record-breaking sub-zero temperatures,

like -66 in Minnesotaand 41 below in Chicago.

Drivers faced whiteoutconditions and despite

the freeze, fires breakingout and the winter winds

not helping firefightersin Brooklyn, New York

where a 10 alarm infernodestroyed a paper mill.

Forecasters say thewarmup will be dramatic.

But the cold is not gone.

It just won't be as extreme.

It is the biggest fentanylbust ever, according

to US Customs and BorderProtection Agents.

Officers say theycaptured nearly 255 pounds

of the synthetic drug, that is fueling a national

epidemic of fatal opioidoverdoses in America.

Agents found the drugs Saturdayin a secret compartment

inside a load of a Mexican produce truck

heading into Arizona.

They say a second scanof tractor trailer truck

detected some anomalies, and police dogs sniffed

out the drugs.

The seized opioids have astreet value of $3.5 million.

Agents say they alsoconfiscated nearly 395 pounds

of methamphetamine, with astreet value of $1.8 million.

President Donald Trumppraised the bust in a tweet

Thursday, writing "Our greatUS Border Patrol Agents

"made the biggest fentanylbust in our country's history.

"Thanks as always, for a job well done."

Going further south into Central America,

President Trump aims to end

the socialist regime in Venezuela.

He is throwing US support behind

removing its dictator from power.

But international pressuremay not be enough.

The Administration is backingInterim President Juan Guaido

but many believe Venezuela's armed forces

will decide the country's future.

Dale Hurd brings us the story.

- Members of the Venezuela opposition

approach an army base, offering soldiers amnesty

from prosecution if theyturn against the government.

The battle for the future of Venezuela

is a battle for the hearts and minds

of the Venezuelan Armed Forces.

Anyone who wants to getrid of Venezuelan President

Nicolas Maduro cannotdo it without the Army.

And that's the trickypart because the Army

has been a willingpartner in the Venezuelan

government's criminal activities.

- Latin American expert,Juan Carlos Hidalgo.

- It is very important whenwe analyze the situation

in Venezuela to keep in mind

that this is not a regular dictatorship.

This is a mafia.

This is a criminal gang.

They are deeply involved incrimes against human rights,

corruption, drug trafficking.

The estimated corruptionruns in the hundreds

of billions of dollars.

- [Dale] Hidalgo saysVenezuela's military leaders

have a strong incentive tokeep Nicolas Maduro in power.

- The armed forces knowthat the alternative

for them to be in poweris either going to jail,

face the justice inVenezuela under a democratic

government, or face extraditionto the United States

for drug trafficking.

- [Dale] And that's whythe opposition is offering

the military amnesty.

The other power broker is Cuba.

Cuba is heavily investedin the survival of Maduro

and is spying on the Army andhelping to enforce loyalty.

- Thousands of Cubantroops are deeply embedded

in the armed forces aswell as the intelligence

services, secret security services.

This is why it's so difficult

for troops to launch an uprising.

- [Dale] Maduro has begunmaneuvering to crush

the rebellion and Tuesdayannounced a formal

investigation of oppositionleader Juan Guaido,

recognized by the US and several nations

as the real leader of Venezuela.

Guido said if anything happens to him,

the protest will intensify.

President Trump called Guaidoand offered his support

and said all options are on the table

in dealing with Maduro.

But Guido has said he'sagainst using the US military

to get rid of Maduro.

Dale Hurd, CBN News.

- An American missionarydoctor who risked his life

to serve patients atthe height of the 2014

Ebola crisis has beenhonored for his service.

Dr. Rick Sacra, contracted the Ebola virus

while caring for pregnantwomen at a Christian

hospital in Liberia.

Thursday evening in NewYork, Dr. Sacra received

the L'Chaim Prize foroutstanding Christian

Medical Missionary Service.

Dr. Sacra, the prize includesa half million dollar

award that will help trainother medical experts

in the West African nation.

Sacra talked about what he'slearned from other missionaries

about the intangiblerewards of their service.

- As I got to knowolder missionary doctors

and people who had devotedtheir lives to this

kind of service, they don't regret it.

They don't say, I've given up so much

and what do I have?

They say, look at thetreasured relationships I have.

Look at the

the little thing I've beenable to do and how God

has used it and multiplied it.

And there's nothing as rewarding as that.

- The L'Chaim Prize wasstarted by American-Jewish

philanthropists, Mark andErica Gerson to help improve

Africa's healthcare infrastructure.

Republicans in the Senateare breaking with President

Donald Trump on a keyforeign policy issue.

CBN News will head to CapitolHill for more on a vote

to slow down the troopwithdrawal from Syria.

That is tonight on CBN's FaithNation at 6:00 pm Eastern.

And you'll find it onlyon the CBN News Channel.

(swoosh)

Coming up, we'll go toSyria itself and look at

the implications of thePresident's announcement

about pulling US troopsout and the power struggle

developing in the region between countries

like Iran and Russia.

- Hello, I'm Terry Meeuwsen.

Did you know that there aremore than 148 million orphans

in the world today, 148 million?

But it was three littlegirls that taught me

about the plight of orphans.

My husband and I spentnearly a month immersed

in the daily activitiesof a Ukrainian orphanage

as we waited to adopt three sisters.

I saw firsthand the utterloneliness, the pain

of rejection and theoverwhelming desire to be loved.

That experience changed me forever.

And out of it grew aministry from my heart

called Orphan's Promise.

Today we're helping orphansand vulnerable children

in more than 50 countries worldwide.

Thousands of childrenare now in safe homes.

They're being educated andthey're learning life skills.

I'm asking you to joinwith me and become family

to these children.

Will you call the numberon your screen right now?

Because every child deservesa chance to be happy.

- President Donald Trump'sdecision to pull US troops

out of Syria has led to a power struggle

among some familiar badactors in the Middle East

like Iran and Russia.

CBN's Chris Mitchelltraveled to Northeast Syria

to find out more aboutwhat this might mean

for the region and beyond.

- After President Trump'sannouncement of a pullout

of US troops a geopoliticaltug-of-war began

over Northeast Syria.

Who wins will determine the future

and fate of the Middle East.

The main players are a threatening lineup.

Turkey's President Erdogan,Russian President Putin,

Syria President Assad andIran's Supreme Leader Khomeini,

all wanting to fill anyvoid left by the exit

of US troops.

Their target?

Leaders of a new largelydemocratic government

inside Northeast Syria.

It includes Christians, Arabs,

Kurds and other ethnic groups.

They say Trump surprisedecision left them at the mercy

of the larger nations around them.

(speaking foreign language)

- [Translator] The peoplein this area are very

frightened by the decisionof the American pullout

because a lot of countriesand militias are coveting

the region east of the Euphratesto replace the American.

Russia, the Assad regime, Iran and Turkey

or the al-Nusra Front thathave declared publicly

that they will supportTurkey on their attack

of the east of the Euphrates.

(speaking foreign language)

- [Translator] Thedecision by President Trump

for the withdrawal ofUS troops was a decision

not at a good time and itwasn't coordinated with us,

if we are ready or not ready.

This decision had reallynegative consequences

on the Council.

- [Chris] Most see Turkeyas their main threat.

- [Chris] Then Syria andRussia came courting,

hoping to build a relationship.

Yet, if this new government were to align

with Assad and Putin, the regional chess game

could increase the threat to Israel.

That's because an alliancebetween this newly

formed government andSyria could provide Iran

with a much larger routeto transport weapons

and supplies to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This would complete Iran'sdesire to build a land bridge

to the Mediterranean.

Israel is already fighting to keep Iran

from basically transformingSyria into its own

military base on Israel's norther border.

Within just the pastyear, Israel has launched

more that 200 strikes againstIranian targets within Syria.

With both Israel and Iranpromising to hit each

other harder, any influxof weapons could turn

the simmering conflict into all out war.

Earlier this month, Secretaryof State, Mike Pompeo

explained what happens whenthe US leaves a power vacuum.

- We learned that when America retreats,

chaos often follows.

When we neglect ourfriends, resentment builds.

And when we partner withour enemies, they advance.

- [Translator] If theAmericas go out and there's no

agreement on the politicalfront, for sure that's

going to cause a lot of chaos in the area.

And that chaos will cause alot of conflict in the region.

- [Chris] Pompeo also saidAmerica is a force for good

in the Middle East andthat's the ultimate hope

of this new groups of leaders.

- [Translator] Your partnershave fought the terrorism

and ISIS side by sidewith our United Syrian

Democratic Forcesalongside American Forces.

Now the war is stillgoing on and the Syrian

Democratic Forces have givenmore than 8,000 martyrs

for the sake of fighting ISIS.

So how do you give up on them that easily?

- While it remains to be seen who will

win this tug-of-warand fill the void here,

all indications are whoever prevails,

will help dictate the futurecourse of the Middle East,

Israel and perhaps the world.

It's all part of a newemerging Middle East.

We'll have more reportshere from Northeast Syria,

including what these new developments mean

for Christians in the region.

Some are openly talkingabout the possibility

of another genocide.

Chris Mitchell, CBN News, Northeast Syria.

- And Chris is actually backnow, in Jerusalem from Syria.

He joins us now.

So Chris, what areChristians telling you about

potential genocide and why?

- Well, you know Efrem, just a week ago

I was sitting down with peopleof a church from Kobani,

Northwest Syria, it's aChurch of the Brethren.

I was sitting down tohaving a Middle East meal.

And they're terrifiedof what might happen.

You could imagine ifyou're going to church

this coming Sunday and realize that

maybe just a mile awayor so, there is a country

that wants to come in.

They remember 1915, the Armenian Genocide,

many of the people that I've talked to,

their grandfathers or great-grandparents

were part of that.

They had to flee.

Also last year, in Afrin, that's when the Turkish Army

came with the Free SyrianArmy, which are basically

Islamists, they're Jihadists,

they came door to doorlooking for Christians,

they burned churches.

And this is what people are saying to us,

that they're really fearfulthere might be another

genocide if Turkey is allowedto come in to Northeast Syria.

- What are the potential scenarios

that might unfold if theUS does actually pull out?

- Well I can think of three, Efrem.

First of all, I cansay that Turkey came in

to invade what they say areterrorists, the Kurdish people.

But there's much more thanjust the Kurds in that.

There's many minorities in that region.

Also, they want to havea 20 mile security zone,

monitored by Turkey,that's another scenario.

Also, it seems that if the US could stay,

that's one possibility as well.

But really, the key rightnow is that the pressure

for Turkey is puttingpressure on this government

inside Northeast Syria, they're talking to the Assad

regime and that mightactually be an agreement

they would do.

It would be very bad, I believefor them in Northeast Syria

as well as Israel 'causethat opens the door for Iran.

- Chris, what do you have planned

for tonight's Jerusalem Dateline?

- Well we have plannedexactly this story, Efrem.

We go into depth about thetug-of-war, the geopolitical.

We even expand on the story you just saw.

We talk about theChristians and the genocide.

And we talk about what Ithink is a quite exciting

story, one of the firstin the Middle East Efrem,

this new government,it's a democratic form

of government, it's a newone in the Middle East

and it could be reallyshades of things to come,

really a good news story.

They have actually set up ademocratic form of government

and it's really a bright ray of hope.

However, it's actuallythreatened by this pullout

of US troops so we'llsee what happens there.

But that'll be on tonight'sJerusalem Dateline.

- Much to look forward to.

Thank you so much, ourCBN News, Middle East

Bureau Chief, ChrisMitchell joining us today,

from Jerusalem, thank you Chris.

And again, you cancatch Jerusalem Dateline

this evening at 9:30 onthe CBN News Channel.

And we're gonna take a look at activities

Christians will be involvedin at the big game this year.

The Superbowl is justtwo days away and fans

are gearing up to see theirfavorite players in action.

The night before the big game,

players, coaches and thebiggest names in the NFL

will gather to name thewinner of the Walter Payton

Man of the Year Award.

It is a big night for theChristian community as well.

Three of this year's nomineeshave ties to the Fellowship

of Christian Athletes.

Bear's tight end, Trey Burton,Kansas City Chief's punter

Dustin Colquitte, andalso up for the award

is Tampa Bay Buccaneers'defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy.

And I spoke with CBN SportsReporter, Shawn Brown

about this weekend's biggame and how the faith

community plays a role.

Some of the players are reallyoutspoken about their faith

as we know.

How does that affect the community,

the NVL community that is.

- The community, theSuperbowl's my favorite event

because of that.

These guys are very, very solid.

They get it.

They know that the Lordis head of their life.

They're not swayed leftor right by the event

because the Superbowlarguably is the biggest

sporting event in the country.

Everybody's watching and you need that,

you need something to keep yourooted in all the excitement.

Yeah, faith is a big, bigpart of the NFL community man.

I love it.

- Do you think we'reseeing a ripple effect

of more and more teams andplayers sharing their testimonies

and faith journeys?

- Absolutely, absolutely.

It varies from team to team.

You look the New EnglandPatriots, they've been here

several times and every yearI've been to the Superbowl

there are so many believers on the team

it is a part of theircommunity, it is a part of

who they are.

You look at last year, the Philadelphia Eagles,

same thing, they're baptizing players.

So as you look at eachorganization you see

a presence of faith in the organization

so it is definitely going up

from organization to organization.

It is awesome to see.

- Alright, real quick,we have the game Sunday

between the Patriots and Rams.

What are we expecting?

- Hopefully, a good game.

Tom Brady's gonna be Tom Brady.

We know that, we know the Pats are gonna

they'll probably, everyone'sgiving them the win.

But if the Rams can, if the defensive guys

Aaron Donald, NdamukongSuh, if they can get

to Tom Brady, we might see a difference.

I mean look, two yearsago, Atlanta Falcons,

it can happen.

They just gotta finish.

Every down, every down.

- (laughing) It mattered.

And we have a specialtreat for you this weekend

on the CBN News Channel.

It's called Football Sunday.

You're gonna hear stories from NFL stars

like Minnesota Vikingsquarterback, Kirk Cousins,

Denver Broncos quarterback Case Keenum

and New Orleans linebacker, Mario Davis,

it is all hosted by NewOrleans Saints, tight end,

Benjamin Watson onlocation in New Orleans.

The show will air Sundayon the CBN News Channel

at 1:00, 5:00, 8:00 and 11:00 pm.

You'll be sure to check it out.

Coming up, some NFLplayers, mostly retired

but also some current ones,

are in Atlanta with apurpose other than football.

They're singing the Gospel.
