The Slave Bible

How slave owners took passages about freedom away from their slaves. Read Transcript

- Oh, hey, welcome to The SuperBook Show.

Today we're at the Museum of the Bible.

And we'll look at some of theunique Bibles they have here.

(camera clicking)

This one actually makes me a bit sad.

Its nickname is the "Slave Bible".

This Bible was given toslaves to read in the 1800's,

allegedly so the slavescould become Christian.

So they could have the gospel.

Here's the thing though,

this Bible is heavily edited.

They cut out all references to freedom,

for example the Exodus,

Moses leading his people out of slavery,

completely gone.

(sad music)

- I've never seen so many people,

there must have been amillion Israelite slaves.

- Slaves no more, thanks to God

and to Moses.

- He will take us to a new life.

- Entire books and largesections of others were cut out.

Anything that talkedabout freedom in Christ.

You could see what theslave owners were doing.

They didn't want their slaves to see

that freedom was a very Christian idea.

They wanted their slaves to hear

the good new of Jesus Christ,

just not all of it.

Not the parts that challengedwhat they were doing,

so they changed theBible to ignore the parts

that made them scared or uncomfortable

or pricked at their consciences.

Seems clear to me, thatwhen you have to ignore

major parts of the Bible,

because the Bible doesn'tfit with your philosophy,

in essence your admittingthat your philosophy is wrong.

Like Eve, in the Garden of Eden.

The snake had her twistthe clear words of God.

- We may eat the fruitof trees of the garden,

but of the fruit of the tree

which is in the midst of the garden

God has said,

you shall not eat it, nor shallyou touch it, lest you die.

- You surely will not die,

for God knows that inthe day you eat of it

your eyes will be opened.

And you will be like God,knowing good and evil.

- The slave Bible is an evil distortion

of the true word of God.

And every time we change the Bible

to fit we what we feel, or want,

or what make's us comfortable.

Really, are we any betterthan those slave owners?

His word is forever alive.

I hope you're enjoying our tourof the Museum of the Bible,

I know that I'm learning a lot.
