Searchers Spot Wreckage from Missing Prop Plane
Searchers have spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing Sunday with 54 people on board.
Five children, including two infants, were among the 49 passengers on board. Five crew members were also aboard the 42-minute flight.
The ATR42-300 twin turboprop plane was flying from Jayapura to the city of Oksibil when it went missing. The wreckage was spotted about 7 miles from its destination.
There was no immediate word if there were any survivors from the crash. The crash happened in bad weather in Indonesia's mountainous easternmost province.
Four postal workers aboard the plane were escorting four bags of cash totaling $468,750 from the goverment. The cash was to be distributed among poor people in remote areas to cushion the jump in fuel costs,
Meanwhile, a rescue team is making its way into the mountains after reports of seeing a plane crash in the area.
This particular airline is said to have a bad safety record. In fact, the European Union won't allow them to fly in because past safety compliance failures.
