Brother of Slain Pastor Arrested, Has History of Mental Illness

Ohio authorities say they'll charge the brother of an Ohio pastor who was shot and killed during services at his church on Sunday.

Witnesses say Rev. William Schooler, 70, went into a study in a back room while the choir was singing. Another man, identified as Daniel Schooler, 68, got up and followed him.

"I didn't realize what was going on, but we heard a boom and then we all ran out of the church. I tried to stop [the] pastor's wife from going back there, but she pushed me out of the way," church member Beulah Booker-Robinson said.

Authorities are still searching for a motive behind the shooting, but they say neither the congregation nor community at large were the target.

"I want to make sure the public understands this is not a random act of violence," Sgt. Creigee Coleman said. "This was somewhat of a domestic situation between family members."

Family and friends say the suspect had a history of mental illness and felt he should be getting money from the church.

"Bipolar, schizophrenic -- he had a lot of things going on he was dealing with," said the pastor's niece, Joyce Napier, of the suspect. "I don't think he woke up this morning and said 'I want to kill my brother.' I just think the mental state and illness goes together and that's what evil does."

Daniel Schooler is in police custody and scheduled for arraignment on Monday.
