Pastor Defends Role as Judge on Racy 'Sex Box'

A racy new show called "Sex Box" is premiering this week on Women Entertainment TV.

"Sex Box" has real life couples enter a sound proof box on a set in front of a panel of judges and a live audience. The couples come out of the box after they have had sex and give details about the experience to three "sexperts."

The three judges then give advice to the pair on how to work through their intimacy issues and improve their sex lives. The contestants on the show are a mix of gay, straight, married, and unwed couples.

One of the three experts is Pastor Yvonne Capehart, who holds a doctorate in counseling and leads a national Christian womens' ministry. CBN News Reporter Charlene Aaron spoke to Capehart on why she felt that, as a Christian leader, it was okay to participate in the show.

Capehart said she rejected the offer to be a judge three times but eventually felt that God was calling her to the position.

"After I had turned it down the third time the Lord, as he did many times in my life, instructed me that he had prepared me to do the show and my presence would make a difference in being on the show," she said.

When asked if she thought the show was too racy for cable television, Capehart said that there are plenty of shows with intimate scenes already on TV.

"Parents should use their judgment to turn the television should their toddlers or teenagers be in the room as with any show," she said.

Since WE TV annouced the show's February 27 premiere, it has recieved a lot of push back from cable watchdogs. Groups like the Parents Television Council think the show exceeds the limit of decency for cable television shows.

"If some adults want to watch a program like that, let them pay for it. But forcing it into the basic cable bundle and making parents and families pay for it is an outrage," PTC President Tim Winter said.

"Sex Box" first started as a British television series in 2013. After some critics found the show dull and uncomfortable to watch, it was not renewed for a second season.

PTC's Melissa Henson said cable companies are crossing a fine line by allowing the show to air.

"I'm not confident that its going to be successful here in the United States, but even if it flops the fact that it was able to air in the first place sets a dangerous precedent," she said.

Henson argues that by allowing this show on cable it won't be long until other networks start breeching the current standards of what is acceptable to broadcast.
