California Orders Water Cuts amid Historic Drought
California's Gov. Jerry Brown is ordering mandatory emergency water cuts throughout the state due to the drought.
Sierra Nevada is experiencing the lowest snow level in 65 years of recordkeeping, which translates to less water in the state's reservoirs.
Brown signed a comprehensive executive order mandating the State Water Resources Control Board to cut the state's overall water use by 25 percent compared with 2013 levels.
Brown said the state is suffering an "historic drought" and everyone must pull together to save water in every possible way.
In January 2014, the governor urged residents to cut water use by 20 percent but the cutback only amounted to 10 percent.
Outdoor water use is responsible for more than half of most residential water bills. Brown told residents watering their lawns every day must become a thing of the past.
