Thousands March in Memory of Slain Putin Rival
12-31-1969
Thirty-thousand people marched in Moscow Sunday to mourn murdered opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, a major critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The march was relatively quiet, with people bearing flowers and tying black ribbons to railings in honor of Nemtsov.
The marchers occasionally broke into chants of "Russia without Putin" or "Say no to war."
The Russian opposition believes the Kremlin is responsible for Nemstov's murder. He was among the few leaders who refused to be cowed.
The Kremlin called Nemtsov a leader of a "fifth column" and painted him as a Russian traitor, serving American and European interests.
Still, the overwhelming majority of Russians support Putin.
