Bermuda Looking to Recover Quickly after Hurricane Nicole

Hurricane Nicole ripped through Bermuda Thursday, pummeling the island with winds up to 115 miles per hour.

The Category 3 storm dissipated through the night but not before it uprooted trees, flooded homes and damaged boats. 

More than 27,000 people were left without power, but the British territory is looking to recover quickly. 

Bermuda's government dispatched crews to clear the roads and assigned engineers to inspect the island's infrastructure. 

National Security Minister Jeff Baron warned residents to stay indoors for their safety.

"There has been significant flooding in areas around the island and some severe road damages," Baron announced. "Obviously, we are also concerned about downed trees and downed power lines, which are live."

School and government offices will remain closed on Friday, while the international airport is expected to open later today. 

The National Hurricane Center reports that although severe storms often affect Bermuda, "a hurricane this strong is rare."
