Axe-Wielding Jihadist Unleashes Terror on German Train

German police say several people were injured in a terror attack on a train in Bavaria Monday evening.

Multiple reports indicate the attacker shouted a jihadist phrase as he used a knife and an axe to hack at people. ISIS has now claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police say the assailant attacked passengers on board a train headed to Wuerzburg when it made an unscheduled stop in Heidingsfeld.

The suspect fled the scene, jumping from the train after someone pulled the emergency cord. But he only ran a few yards before police managed to shoot and kill him.

At least five people were injured in the attack. Three people sustained serious injury, two of whom were members of a Chinese tourist family. At least two others were moderately injured and 14 others were treated for shock.

The attacker has been identified as a 17-year-old Afghan asylum seeker who came to Germany as an unaccompanied minor two years ago.

There are reports he shouted "Allahu akbar," which means "Allah is the greatest," during the train attack. And investigators raiding his room also found a hand-painted flag of the Islamic State group.

He lived in a home for teenage refugees until two weeks ago when he was placed with a foster family.
